The co-headlining attraction of tonight's (Sat., Dec. 14, 2013) UFC on Fox 9: "Johnson vs. Benavidez" event at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, California, featured Urijah Faber continuing his quest to win UFC gold in a bantamweight battle against rising star Michael McDonald.
Faber opened with a high kick that missed and it wasn't long before the two were rolling around on the mat. The hometown boy had top position but McDonald was staying busy searching for submissions from the bottom. Damage was minimal from either side, and after a couple minutes, the referee stood them back up before the round closed in Faber's favor.
In the second stanza, "The California Kid" landed a couple hard right hands that rocked "Mayday". The finish didn't come but it was close on a number of occasions.
Then, it happened.
Faber came over the top with a hard right hand as McDonald was running in on him. That led to shaky legs and Urijah came rushing in hard with reckless abandon, knowing he need not fear any counter shots. Sure enough, he landed a few more big shots that put McDonald down and left him defenseless to a guillotine.
Wrap, squeeze, tap, fight done.
I think we have a new bantamweight title challenger, no?
