Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) announced Friday (Dec. 13, 2013) that UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones will share the cover of Electronic Arts (EA) Sports UFC with fellow 205-pound roster mate, Alexander Gustafsson, during a live video reveal.
EA is one of the biggest names in the video game industry and to commemorate the debut title with the producer, the UFC allowed fans to vote for on a fighter who would grace the cover with Jones. What started as a sixteen fighter field that included fan favorites such as Chael Sonnen and Anthony Pettis has been dwindled down to one.
Gustafsson beat out Daniel Cormier in the opening round of voting, Miesha Tate in the second round and Chael Sonnen in the third. You can now added UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre, who "The Mauler" toppled in the final round, to that list of distinguished fighters.
The popular Swede became a fan favorite after his UFC 165 bout with "Bones" that had UFC commentator Joe Rogan proclaiming it to be the "best fight of all-time." In a bout that went the distance and saw both fighters bruised, but not broken, it seems poetic in a way that they share the cover for the game.
EA Sports UFC is a next-gen title that will hit the XBox One and Playstation 4 late in spring with a planned release on March 5, 2014. Previous UFC titles were published by the now defunct THQ, which created other notable series such as "Saints Row" and "Red Faction."
The EA title is expected to have an advanced artificial intelligence system that will be able to recognize player strategy and make slight changes to make for a more realistic playing experience. The game will also simulate "full body deformation" that's meant to connect the player with his or her character.
