Nate Loughran returns, faces Erick Silva at UFC Fight Night 36 on Feb. 15 in Brazil

Jason Silva-USA TODAY Sports

If Erick Silva ever hopes to live up to his potential, he's going to have to start from the bottom and work his way back up, beginning with a fight next February in Brazil against a blast from the past.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has stitched together a welterweight pairing for its upcoming UFC Fight Night 36: "Machida vs. Mousasi" fight card, scheduled for Saturday, February 15, 2014 on FOX Sports 1 from Arena Jaragua in Santa Catarina, Brazil.

Erick Silva vs. Nate Loughran, according to Combate.

Once considered one of the division's brightest prospects, this latest pairing is likely to be seen as a step down for Silva (15-4), who was thrown into the 170-pound deep end perhaps a bit too soon, as evidenced by losses to Jon Fitch and most recently, Dong Hyun Kim.

Back to the drawing board.

Loughran (11-1), meanwhile, returns to the Octagon following a five-year absence that left him at 1-1 under the ZUFFA banner. The Californian has just two mixed martial arts (MMA) bouts to his name -- both wins -- since losing to Tim Credeur way back at the promotion's inaugural "Fight for the Troops" card in late 2008.

He's back, but is he better than ever?

UFC Fight Night 36 will be headlined by a middleweight main event pitting former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida opposite ex-Strikeforce 205-pound titleholder Gegard Mousasi. In the co-main event, Ronaldo Souza takes one step closer to a division title shot at the expense of Francis Carmont.
