Eddie Alvarez won a hotly contested split decision victory over Michael Chandler at Bellator 106 last night (Nov. 2, 2013) at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, California to become the new Bellator Lightweight champion, a title he held once before.
Their first meeting at Bellator 58 was proclaimed as one of the best fights of the year and last night's bout exceeded all expectations as it became a classic in its own right.
It was the kind of fight that told a story and after 25 minutes, both men showed the wear and tear of an absolute war. CompuStrike, the official statistics firm for Bellator, provided a breakdown of the fight.
Alvarez was able to slightly out strike Chandler and did noticeable damage, which was enough to give him the fight in judges' eyes. Chandler dominated the wrestling potion of the fight, scoring 10 of 21 takedown attempts.
