UFC 167 results: Chael Sonnen admits Rashad Evans is a better fighter - 'I got mauled'

Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sp

Chael Sonnen is refreshingly honest when explaining how he got "mauled" by Rashad Evans at UFC 167.

"I had one significant problem, which is I took on a better fighter. You know, I got mauled. When he got in that top position, I just couldn't go anywhere. I had a fence on one side and a world champion on the other side and I was trying but he hit me so hard. And then he did it again and again. Yeah, I think that I could have some moments with him, I think that I've got some spots where I could be a lot more competitive but that wasn't one. Once he got on top of me, I just couldn't up. We could still be out there and I would still be down. I just couldn't get up."

-- Chael Sonnen speaks on his decisive loss to Rashad Evans in the co-main event of last night's (Sat., Nov. 16, 2013) UFC 167: "St. Pierre vs. Hendricks" pay-per-view (PPV) from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the post-fight press conference. When asked what happened and why the bout went the way it did, "The American Gangster" was refreshingly honest in his reply, stating, quite simply, that he ran into a much better fighter. Evans absolutely dominated the bout in every area, stopping Sonnen in the very first round via technical knockout, though it certainly appeared Chael tapped to strikes. Either way, he lost, and he did so without offering much offense of his own. Perhaps that wouldn't be the case on another, better day, but it was certainly the case here. No matter, he's still got a coaching gig on The Ultimate Fighter Brazil lined up opposite Wanderlei Silva, who he will settle a score with sometime next year. Don't tune out just yet, Manics, the bad guy isn't done providing thrills.
