UFC 167 results: Georges St. Pierre wins controversial decision over Johny Hendricks, announced he's stepping away from the sport

USA TODAY Sports

Super close fight but wow.

Georges St. Pierre, quite possibly the greatest welterweight of all time, attempted to defend his 170-pound title tonight (Sat., Nov. 16, 2013) against Johny Hendricks in the main event of UFC 167: "St. Pierre vs. Hendricks" at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Attempt: Successful.

It wasn't without controversy, however. The bout went all five rounds and it was a very close back-and-forth affair, though to look at the two guys faces after the final horn sounded, it certainly appeared Hendricks was the victor.

However, the judges scorecards showed a split decision victory for St. Pierre, 48-47, 47-48, and 48-47.

St. Pierre attempted to utilize his wrestling but mostly failed to score the takedowns he's become known for. Hendricks, meanwhile, got two takedowns of his own, something you almost never see against the welterweight king.

But where "Big Rig" did most of his damage was with his hands. In fact, "Rush" admitted to being so hurt throughout the bout that he was suffering from memory loss immediately and couldn't recall the entire bout in his post-fight interview.

Then, he shocked everyone by announcing he was going to step away from the sport, at least for a little while. When prompted, he wouldn't commit to retiring, but he did say he was leaving for a while.
