Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White booked top Welterweight prospect, Rory MacDonald, against Robbie Lawler at UFC 167 last night (Sat., Nov. 16, 2013) because he felt "Ruthless" would make "Ares" engage in a fist fight.
Did he ever.
It took a little time to get going, with the pair splitting the first two rounds. Lawler was the more aggressive fighter in the first, while MacDonald dominated with is wrestling and top position in the second.
In the third and final round, however, Lawler took over, lighting up the Canadian on his feet and nearly finishing him on several occasions. To his credit, MacDonald was able to survive Lawler's fury and see the final bell. In fact, with about 30 seconds remaining in the 170-pound match, MacDonald scored a late takedown and ended with a nice dose of ground-and-pound.
Too little, too late.
Lawler ultimate ended up winning the split decision, keeping his record perfect (3-0) inside the Octagon since his return to the world's leading mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion.
