St. Pierre vs. Hendricks, Round 5

Georges St. Pierre, quite possibly the greatest welterweight of all time, attempted to defend his 170-pound title tonight (Sat., Nov. 16, 2013) against Johny Hendricks in the main event of UFC 167: "St. Pierre vs. Hendricks" at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The fifth and final frame saw St. Pierre come out quickly and firing punches in the center. Then, for some reason, the champion shot in for another takedown.

But he failed.

Not only that, "Big Rig" reversed "Rush" against the fence again. They reset before another takedown attempt from the French-Canadian, one that actually worked this time. Unfortunately, for the champion at least, he couldn't do anything with it.

He wasn't strong enough.

Once they stood back up, Hendricks simply needed to survive and get to the cards, or it certainly appeared that way. St. Pierre, once again, went back to all he knew, wrestling. He worked for an arm and a submission but the horn sounded and that was that.

Amazing scores from the judges: St. Pierre 48-47 twice, Hendricks 48-47. That's a split decision win for the champion.

St. Pierre vs. Hendricks, Round 4

Hendricks, to his credit, despite being so tired, met St. Pierre in the middle of the cage and fired off with jabs and left hands. Volume seemed to take precedent early but that quickly gave way to headhunting.

A brief clinch led to an odd slip from the champion and just like that, the challenger was on top in superior position with time running out. He was staying active, too, doing his best not to get stood up so he could score more and more points.

Surprisingly enough, Hendricks let him up. Once they were standing, "GSP" was bleeding everywhere. They continued exchanging punches until St. Pierre shot in for a takedown. He was quickly reversed once they ended up against the fence. It turned into a stalemate rather quickly, which was bad for "Rush" considering how he certainly seemed to be down on the scorecards.

St. Pierre vs. Hendricks, Round 3

In between rounds, Hendricks' corner was begging him to breathe. He was looking more and more tired while St. Pierre seemed far more comfortable, fully recovered from the earlier blitz.

Or at least as recovered as he could be.

"Rush" fired off leg kicks while avoiding the power shots as they came in. Then, he was slipping more and more punches and landing his counter strikes with far more accuracy than the first two rounds. The tide seemed to be turning as the minutes ticked away.

Just as it appears that way, though, "Big Rig" popped an uppercut that did some very real damage. His timing was on point but his enthusiasm was seeping away as the bout wore on. In fact, he was visibly fatigued, enough so that he worked for a takedown with under a minute to go.

And he got it.

St. Pierre did get back up, but the late takedown may have solidified the round for Hendricks. That could mean three in his favor going into the championship rounds.

St. Pierre vs. Hendricks, Round 2

Hendricks came out in the second round throwing kicks that St. Pierre countered with a stiff jab. After exchanging a few more kicks, the challenger got aggressive, jumping in with more offense than he had before.

Then, Hendricks landed a hard shot and started firing away. St. Pierre was clearly rocked and Hendricks was coming in harder and harder, trying to knock the champion out.

It wasn't happening, though.

Amazingly enough, "Rush" was surviving with some combination of will and perseverance.

Hendricks inexplicably shot in and held St. Pierre against the fence for a time before "GSP" reversed out and reset in the center. Once there, he went back to throwing kicks. Both guys were starting to look tired already, Hendricks due to a combination of punching himself out and poor cardio, and St. Pierre due to damage sustained in the earlier onslaught.

Still, they stood in the center and exchanged punches and kicks.

Hendricks continued coming down the pipe with that hard left hand while St. Pierre countered with right hands. It was closer towards the end of the round but Hendricks appeared to have the edge after the first two frames.

St. Pierre vs. Hendricks, Round 1

The champion came out pumping the jab. The very moment Hendricks threw a punch, St. Pierre grabbed a takedown and worked for a guillotine.

Just like that, points. And a clear assertion that it won't be easy to win this fight, on either side.

They got back to standing fairly quickly and wrestled up against the fence, trading reversals and knees to the thighs and mid-section. After about 25 seconds, Mario Yamasaki separated the two and they went back to standing across from each other.

It didn't take long for "GSP" to shoot in for a takedown and when he did, "Big Rig" was waiting with a big uppercut.

The French-Canadian got through it, but the American was firing off hard elbows while St. Pierre was low holding a double leg. Then, Hendricks reversed him and scored a takedown of his own, much to the delight of the crowd.

With two minutes on the clock, they reset again.

Hendricks fired off with a hard knee but St. Pierre survived it. He even answered with a head kick that Hendricks avoided enough of to brush off. This led to another clinch and more knees to the legs from Hendricks, who definitely had a clear game plan as far as the clinch was concerned.

The first round closed with Hendricks throwing big punches that were just missing.
