When the powers that be with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) put together the Demian Maia vs. Jake Shields fight that took place tonight (Wed., Oct. 9, 2013) in the main event of the UFC Fight Night 29 show on Fox Sports 1 from Sao Paulo, Brazil, surely visions of a submission showcase were dancing around in their heads. It's just too bad the finished product was a brutal, grinding, five-round, 25-minute battle for positional control. The result was Shields earning a split decision victory, much to the chagrin of the audience. Then again, had Maia been awarded the "W" it wouldn't have affected the quality of the action -- if you can call it that -- that preceded it. What's truly unfortunate here is the fact that Maia could have earned a title shot had he turned in an impressive performance. Now, both he and Shields are treading water at 170-pounds with no real hope of changing their fortunes anytime soon.
