Maia vs. Shields, Round 5

The main event of tonight's (Wed., Oct. 9, 2013) UFC Fight Night 29: "Maia vs. Shields" event from Sao Paulo, Brazil, featured Demian Maia looking to continue his impressive run in the welterweight division against the always game Jake Shields. A victory, if impressive enough, could possibly earn the Brazilian a shot at the 170-pound championship. That's motivation enough to put on a show.

The final round opened with Maia throwing hard punches and Shields just looking for the right opening to earn yet another takedown so he could lay around and bore everyone to death. The crowd was quiet but that seemed more out of apathy than discontent.

Or maybe everyone just decided to go home.

Shields shot in for another takedown and Maia defended against the fence. The referee was proactive this time, quickly letting both fighters know they needed to work lest he separate them and make them fight.

As if.

They did end up resetting and it was there that Maia landed a few shots. Shields had enough rather quickly and shot in for yet another takedown, which he couldn't complete.

The hammer sounded for the final 10 seconds and Maia let it all go while Shields threw kicks to keep him away. This was an awful fight.

Maia vs. Shields, Round 4

Shields opened the fourth round the same way he opened the last two: he used his striking to set up a takedown attempt. He was unsuccessful on his first shot, leading to a clinch and a battle against the fence.

It stayed there for a couple minutes before the referee finally stepped in and made them reset back in the center of the cage. It didn't take long after the restart for Shields to grab a single leg, though the takedown was stuffed. He shot another after a break but failed on this one too, electing to pull guard immediately after.

That meant Maia would get the chance to work from on top with nearly two minutes remaining in the round.

He struggled to make anything happen and, shockingly enough, the referee stood the two up. It seemed odd, considering how much more time Shields was given in a similar position, but that's what happened.

Nothing going on the restart. Total shit headed to the final frame.

Maia vs. Shields, Round 3

Even knowing we weren't watching Mike Tyson in his prime, the standing exchanges to kick off round three were particularly ugly. Mouths were wide open and punches were wild and winging all around.

Naturally, Shields attempted to wrestle to get back to top control on the floor but Maia defended well and actually pushed the American against the cage with a flurry of punches. He followed that up with a takedown into back control. But just as he was about to sink the hooks in, Shields turned over on him and found himself back on top.

Oh boy.

There isn't much to say beyond that. Shields got on top and minutes later the round ended.

Maia vs. Shields, Round 2

After a couple of kicks to open the second round, Shields dropped all pretense and shot under for a takedown. Maia did the same thing at the same time, leading to a quick bump of the heads, but after a brief reset, Shields shot in for another double leg.

This one got the job done.

That meant we were smack dab in the middle of a Jake Shields fight, so moderately busy top control with occasional submission looks was the name of the game. Enough to not be stood up, not enough to make for a truly exciting contest.

For his part, Maia was throwing his legs up and looking for a triangle choke from the bottom. Beyond that, there wasn't much he could do.

Shields was effectively neutralizing his foe but it was putting everyone to sleep.

Yawn.

Maia vs. Shields, Round 1

The bout opened with Maia attacking Shields with a strategy he's employed to great success in years past. In short, he clinched, earned a takedown, and worked for a submission from top.

He couldn't get it, though, and after some really hard work, the American managed to get back to his feet and push the Brazilian up against the fence. It didn't matter, however, as Maia earned himself another takedown not long after. It wasn't long after that that he had Shields' back in mount and was working for a choke.

He couldn't get that either.

What's worse, Shields reversed and found himself on top and in control to close out the opening round. His attempts at working for a submission proved fruitless and they went to the second essentially at a stalemate.
