Miguel Cotto made quick work of Delvin Rodriguez at the Amway Center in Orlando, FL on Saturday night (Oct. 5, 2013). Cotto entered the bout on the first two fight losing streak of his career following a disappointing showing against Austin Trout in 2012.
Cotto is arguably the best boxer to come out of Puerto Rico and was fighting to stay relevant in an ever changing Welterweight landscape. He finds himself in the final years of his storied career that saw him win titles in two separate weight classes.
For his bout with Rodriguez, he joined Freddie Roach, who has a knack for getting the absolute best out of his fighters. And tonight, Cotto showed that he still has plenty left in the tank with his absolutely dominant performance of Rodriguez.
To call it a "vintage" Cotto performance would be doing a disservice as it's my opinion that he looked better than ever. He attacked the body with such ferocity that his opponent completely forgot about defending the head. A body shot set up the left hook that ended the fight. Two extra punches just put a stamp on it.
Cotto has options at this point going forward. He can either try and rebuild his career for one final run at the top or he can look to cash out and pursue big money fights with Juan Manuel Marquez or Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. No matter the choice, I'll be watching.
