One good thing about today's UFC on FOX 9 press conference, which was held at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, California, is that it will finally give Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight Champion Anthony Pettis a chance to figure out what Josh Thomson looks like.
After all, no one really knows who "The Punk" is.
They'll certainly know if the former Strikeforce titleholder is able to make history on December 14, 2013, when he goes toe-to-toe with the 155-pound kingpin in a five-round championship FOX fight for all the marbles. Assuming Thomson doesn't get knocked out in the opening frame.
Here's a look at champion and challenger coming nose-to-nose at today's presser (video here):
Somewhere in "The True North," T.J. Grant is frowning.
Also shaking hands and kissing babies at today's fan-friendly event is former World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber. who has been unable to reclaim the gold in a pair of subsequent 145-pound title fights. He also came up empty after dropping down a class, but could get right back into the thick of things by deposing Michael McDonald from the bantamweight office.
"Mayday," judging by today's staredown, doesn't look ready to step down.
In addition to a solid 1-2 combination in the main and co-main events, a stellar televised main card brings up the rear. Matt Brown looks to get one step closer to a welterweight title shot at the expense of former 170-pound interim champion Carlos Condit.
And let's not forget about the featherweight fireworks expected between Chad Mendes vs. Nik Lentz.
