Gunnar Nelson car crash: 'Gunni' suffers minor injuries after truck plunges into Iceland river

Brazilian jiu-jitsu phenom and undefeated mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Gunnar Nelson manages to walk away from a car crash in his native Iceland with only minor injuries.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight Gunnar Nelson is a lucky man.

The currently undefeated "Gunni" (11-0) was able to walk away from a car crash over the weekend in his home country of Iceland, after the pick-up truck he was riding in slid off an icy road, rolled downhill several times and ended up in Þjórsá, Iceland's longest river.

MMA Viking has the account from Nelson's father:

"Gunnar is fine but he had to have some stitches in his arm. It (truck) ended up on its wheels in Þjórsá, this is Iceland's longest river. It's a glacier river with very hard current. If the car had gone one meter further into the river it would have hit deep water and the current would have taken it. If they had gone off road a few meters before or later it would have been much worse and they would also have gone in the river."

Not everyone is as lucky.

UFC featherweight Matt Grice was hospitalized with brain trauma following his horrific car accident last month in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. In addition, mixed martial arts (MMA) icon and TapouT founder "Mask" was killed when he was involved in an early-morning crash back in 2009.

Nelson is currently 2-0 inside the Octagon and is expected to fight again in early 2014.
