Velasquez vs. Dos Santos, Round 5

Junior dos Santos knocked out Cain Velasquez in the first meeting. Velasquez dominated Dos Santos for five full rounds in the second meeting. Tonight (Sat., Oct. 19, 2013) in the main event of UFC 166: "Velasquez vs. Dos Santos 3" at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, they met for a third and final time to settle the score in an awesome heavyweight trilogy over the division title.

Before the round began, the doctor had to check on Dos Santos' eye, as his left appeared to be swollen shut. He was cleared, somehow, and Velasquez proceeded to take him down in short order.

A lame triangle attempt came up, uh, lame, and "Cigano" used the cage to get back to his feet. The clinch came next, of course, with Velasquez once again jumping in and out with effective offense. By the end, Dos Santos couldn't even throw his punches proper.

Fatigue combined with a severe beating led to his dropping to his knees on a failed choke attempt and just covering his head against multiple blows. Finally, the referee stepped in to stop it.

Velasquez wins by TKO.

Velasquez vs. Dos Santos, Round 4

It took all of eight seconds for Velasquez to land another hard right hand to the chin. A clinch followed but it was only a means to delay what seemed inevitable.

Sure enough, Cain backed out and blasted away with punches, all of which looked close to forcing a stoppage. But just as soon as he jumped out to fire away, he jumped back in to control the action.

This is how things went for the next couple minutes, as Dos Santos tried his best to find the space to land a big right hand, one that might have a chance of winning him the fight. He looked dead on his feet but his punches were still powerful.

But powerful enough?

Soon after, his face was hamburger enough for the doctor to come in and check on him. Once that happened and he was cleared to return, the action restarted and he went back to throwing hail mary haymakers.

No dice.

That's not to say he didn't find some success with a couple short elbows coming into and out of the clinch. Still, Velasquez was relentless and Dos Santos went back to his corner looking like he had been run over by a truck.

Velasquez vs. Dos Santos, Round 3

Velasquez wasted no time grabbing Dos Santos and once again pushing him up against the fence. It was a strategy that was getting the job done but really chaffing the ass of the fans in attendance at the arena who were livid.

Then, out of nowhere, Velasquez landed a HUGE shot that put "Cigano" on his ass and had referee Herb Dean looking for any indication that he could step in and save the big Brazilian from further damage. Unbelievably enough, though, Junior survived the initial push.

On top of that, he survived each and every shot that came after too. Somehow, someway, he continued getting tagged but just wouldn't go down for good. Not here and not now at least.

Wow.

Velasquez vs. Dos Santos, Round 2

Velasquez opened the second round rushing out and getting in his opponent's face. He pushed the Brazilian up against the cage and made sure to keep his pressure game strong.

In response to this, Dos Santos did his best to stay measured, trying to keep his gas tank full while fending off Cain's blitzing offense. No easy task, considering how well Velasquez rushes in.

The two battled against the fence and it was there that Dos Santos attempted to fire off with shots to score some offense. It didn't look all that special, though, not with Velasquez pressing him so hard.

The round ended with Cain just missing a takedown and Junior landing an overhand shot.

Velasquez vs. Dos Santos, Round 1

Velasquez opened the same way he did before, striking hard and fast while working for takedowns. Dos Santos, this time, returned fire and held his own just fine, though he was hurt at times.

It was relatively even by the end, with Cain scoring the numbers but the Brazilian landing a big shot that had his foe rocked.

Pic: Diego Sanchez Huge Eye Cut From Gilbert Melendez Elbow At UFC 166

The gash was suffered early in the first round and was checked by the referee in the second and third. And, in the final frame, Sanchez went completely berserk.
