Demian Maia vs. Jake Shields Fight Metric report reveals how close UFC Fight Night 29 main event bout was

Jason Silva-USA TODAY Sports

It was really that close.

There is no disputing the fact that Demian Maia and Jake Shields engaged in an incredibly boring but still extremely close bout in the main event of last night's (Wed., Oct. 9, 2013) UFC Fight Night 29 showcase from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Some may feel the judges decision, to award the victory to the American, was controversial, or at least could have gone the other way.

The better question to ask may be just how close the fight truly was.

The fine folks at Fight Metric (seriously, go read their site if you don't already, it's an outstanding resource) have posted their report on the bout and it tells the tale:

Shields has the edge in volume but that doesn't truly gauge effectiveness. That's when the judges are tasked with deciding how much more important it is that Maia landed a hard right hand versus Shields maintaining a suffocating top control for two minutes straight.

That's not an envious position to be in.

Surely you have your opinions, though, Maniacs, and we would love to hear them. You know where to sound off.
