Seventy-one years ago today (Jan. 17, 2013) an American sports icon was born in Louisville, Kentucky.
Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Clay, is "The Greatest" professional boxer in the history of the sport. However, he was so much more than a fiery, smooth-talking ass kicker. While he dominated the opposition throughout his heavyweight title reign in the 1960s, stopping Sonny Liston (twice) to claim the prestigious world championship, Ali was also busy outside the ring as an outspoken -- and often controversial -- firebrand.
Love him or hate him, Ali stood up for what he believed and fought hard in the face of constant adversity.
Ali -- who is still fighting today against a much more sinister foe, Parkinson's Disease -- is a once-in-a-lifetime-type of individual who is worth celebrating.
