Video: Strikeforce's Josh Barnett thought last night 'was a good day to die'

Josh Barnett has a way with words. Last night (Jan. 12, 2013) was no exception after he submitted Nandor Guelmino at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla., to close out his mixed martial arts (MMA) career with the promotion.

Josh Barnett was a "dead man walking" last night (Jan. 12, 2013) at Strikeforce: "Marquardt vs. Saffiedine," which took place at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

"Baby-faced Assassin" was admittedly not even close to being in top form for his Heavyweight showdown with Nandor Guelmino thanks to a serious of setbacks -- sinus infections, wisdom teeth and the flu -- that had him seriously questioning whether or not he could compete on fight night.

The goods news is he didn't have to be his at his best.

Barnett needed little more than two cautious minutes to submit a "nervous" Guelmino, who he felt helped him out by serving up the eventual finish. Indeed, Barnett -- who described his winning gameplan as a combination of "conservation of energy" and "being efficient" -- passed up several opportunities to make moves, but he simply could not ignore the gift "The Hun" gave him to end the fight as soon as possible.

"I was a dead man walking," Barnett said in the post-fight video interview above. "I threw away my life and I didn't really care anymore about living or dying. I thought today was a good day to die, so let's go out and do what I was born to do."

Barnett -- a 16-year mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran -- certainly demonstrated his guile in his last fight for Strikeforce, which is closing up shop and melting into its more successful sister company, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). It's unclear if "War Master" will return to the Octagon because of differences with the company's president, Dana White, but it would be a shame for him to not get the chance.

He's a gamer.
