The UFC has been furiously building its schedule to close out the 2012 fight campaign and late yesterday (Fri., Sept. 7, 2012), the promotion announced a fun bantamweight bout for UFC 154: "St. Pierre vs. Condit" on Nov. 17 in Montreal.
The UFC Canada twitter account brought the word:
"Bantamweight @ivanmenjivar returns home to fight in Montreal at #UFC154 where he will now be taking on Azamat Gashimov on November 17."
Menjivar (24-9, 3-1 UFC) is almost a 12 year veteran of the sport, having fought some of the finest mixed martial artists in the game, including top fighters such as Georges St. Pierre, Joe Lauzon, and Urijah Faber. He's a quick fighter with many unusual striking techniques, and he's also fairly experienced on the ground.
"The Pride of El Salvador" started his UFC career in April of 2011, reeling off three straight wins against increasingly difficult opponents. In stark contrast to his first three UFC appearances, Menjivar lost his last outing by unanimous decision in a painfully boring fight against Mike Easton.
He'd like to get back in the win column, and he'd like to do so by giving Azamat Gashimov a not-so-warm welcome to the Octagon come fight night.
Azamat Gashimov (7-1, 0-0 UFC) has so far fought exclusively in Russia and Ukraine, defeating seven of his eight opponents. All but one of his wins are stoppages, four of which come by submission.
He has only lost once, a technical knockout defeat at the hands of fellow Russian Alexander Keshtov, but has bounced back with two straight wins since.
Gashimov now trains in New Jersey along with fellow Russians Adlan Amagov and Khabib Nurmagamedov, as well as fighters like Jim Miller and Charlie Brenneman. There were reports that he was slated to fight Alex Soto at UFC on Fuel TV 3, but the fight fell through.
UFC 154 will take place on Sat., Nov. 17 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is expected to be headlined by a welterweight title bout as Georges St. Pierre returns from a knee injury to fight the interim champion, Carlos Condit.
Also scheduled for the card is a 170-pound title eliminator pitting Johny Hendricks vs. Martin Kampmann.
