UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior "Cigano" dos Santos was scheduled to fight former number one contender Alistair Overeem at UFC 146. Overeem failed his pre-fight drug test and was pulled from the fight and was suspended by NSAC for 9 months.
Junior took on Frank Mir(Overeem's replacement) at UFC 146, Cigano defended his title via KO/TKO in the second round. Cain Velasquez also fought at UFC 146, he took on and beat Antonio "Pezao" Silva and was granted a rematch with JDS. Although Velasquez was granted the number one contender, Junior asked Dana White if he could fight Alistair Overeem instead after hearing some statements that were made by Overeem(HERE). Dana was very interested in the fight as well as the fans. Junior's request was not granted mainly because of Overeem's suspension.
Cigano will now defend his title against the original contender Cain Velasquez at UFC 155 but Cigano and everyone knows he will eventually face Alistair Overeem. Here's an exclusive interview with Dos Santos.
"I knew Velasquez was the contender, but if UFC wanted me to fight Overeem I’d gladly shut him up because he’s been saying a lot of crap, he’s been learning from Chael Sonnen".
"I’m tired of these guys who think they’re so big, so strong, so bad and that people will get frightened by them because they look bad. There’s no such thing anymore. We’re athletes and the winner will be the one who trains the most. That’s what I have to say about it".
Dos Santos says that Overeem doesn't deserve a shot at the title for his comeback fight, since he has been suspended for using illegal substances but said he would not mind hurting the challenger.
"I really told Dana White I’d love to fight Overeem. Beating Overeem, actually. That’s what’s going to happen when this bout actually happens. It would be a pleasure. From the way I see it, he didn’t deserve a title shot. Cain deserves it and that’s why we’re fighting. Overeem deserves a beating and I’m going to arrange that".
