With the news that this Saturday night's Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy event has been cancelled due to an injury to Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez, one of the most severely effected fighters on the roster is Pat Healy, who's left with nothing to do after a full training camp.
Instead, he'd love to fight.
Speaking with Matt Bishop earlier today, Healy promised that he would have been willing to take any short notice fight to save the card if need be:
"I would've taken any fight they put in front of me. I've always been that way. I never not accept a fight. I don't think it should even be up to us to choose. If they have a fight, I'll fight anyone. Three rounds, five rounds, it wouldn't have mattered."
But that's not all.
With the event now kaput, Healy feels that if Gilbert Melendez is out for an extended amount of time, why not make an interim title against Josh Thomson? After all, that's how Melendez initially won his Strikeforce belt.
"I'd love to fight [on the November show]. Shoot, me and Josh [Thomson], they do the interim titles in the UFC, so why not do it if Gil's going to be out of a long time? Me and Josh can do a five-round fight for the interim title in November and that can be a good main event or co-main event, depending on what happens with that card."
With Frank Mir out of the November show, it wouldn't be a bad idea to prop up the main card with a big lightweight attraction.
Fighting friends and training partners has been a touchy subject for some Zuffa employees but despite the fact that Healy trained with Josh Thomson in preparation for his title bout against Melendez, he'd have no problem fighting him.
"This is business. I'm in the fight business, I'm down to fight whoever."
Healy actually fought Josh Thomson in his first bout at lightweight in Strikeforce, winning the first two rounds with his wrestling before fading in the third and getting submitted. It would certainly be interesting to see them duke it out again.
So what's your take on this wild situation, Maniacs?
Would you like to see an interim title if Melendez is out for an extended period? Do you even care about Strikeforce anymore?
