UFC 152: "Jones vs. Belfort" goes down tonight (Sat., Sept. 22, 2012) live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and one of the featured fights of the evening is a middleweight war between Michael Bisping vs. Brian Stann.
That's Bisping, a British brawler, against Stann, an American hero.
Naturally, the previews have pushed this narrative strongly and this one is no different. In fact, it plays on the coincidence that the War of 1812 occurred 200 years ago today.
Stann:
"The War of 1812 was our second war against Great Britian. They came and burned down our White House, so we had to smack them and send them back across the pond again. Most of the War of 1812 took place in Canada and the fight's in Toronto, so the stars are certainly aligned."
And Bisping:
"The British empire controlled two-thirds of the world and for a tiny little island, that's not bad. We couldn't be bothered with America so we gave it back. You've got one good looking, suave, sophisticated Englishman against a knuckle-headed Marine from America."
The good news is patriotism goes out the window once they climb inside the cage doors and it's just one man against another, allegiance to any particular country aside. We're only a number of hours away, too, Maniacs. Get ready.
