It's not the fight he wanted but it's the fight he's getting. And he's a big favorite to win it, too.
Chris Weidman has been doing everything he can to convince those in charge at the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) to book him as the next challenger for Anderson Silva's middleweight championship. He feels he earned it by smashing Mark Munoz at UFC on FUEL TV 4 on July 11 in San Jose.
But "The Spider" is too busy playing Superman and saving UFC 153 by fighting Stephan Bonnar on short notice, a development Weidman responded to simply by tweeting, "Ouch."
Indeed.
Never mind that now, though, because Weidman has a 185-pound battle lined up against Tim Boetsch at UFC 155: "Dos Santos vs. Velasquez 2" on Sat., Dec. 29, 2012, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and he's a -355 favorite, according to MMAOddsBreakers.com.
Don't expect "The Barbarian" to just roll over.
Since dropping to middleweight, Boetsch has rattled off four consecutive wins, including his bookie-busting upset over Hector Lombard at the UFC 149: "Faber vs. Barao" PPV earlier this year. Prior to that, the New England nightmare beat the brakes off former division number one contender Yushin Okami.
He's as tough as they come. And at +265, he might be worth a bet.
Any Maniacs biting?
UFC 155 is expected to be headlined by a heavyweight title fight that pits reigning division champion Junior dos Santos against Cain Velasquez in a rematch from their UFC on FOX bout in late 2011. The undercard is loaded with top flight match-ups including Chael Sonnen vs. Forrest Griffin, Gray Maynard vs. Joe Lauzon, and Alan Belcher vs. Yushin Okami.
