News Headlines for Discussion/Debate

I ran across a couple interesting articles this morning that I thought would be good for debate/discussion. Just something to pass the time here on mania. Hopefully I can get a little perspective from some our UK friends here as one of the articles is about British police being armed with military weaponry. I wonder how many of you guys have heard about this and what you think of this type of developement.

First up,

Police Attempt To Raid Garage Sale, Get Kicked To Curb

I thought this was both good and bad news. Good to see someone standing up for their rights and setting these cops straight, a little disturbing that cops are shutting down garage sales and children's lemonade stands.

Next is,

British police get battlefield weapons

This one is pretty short, so I'll just copy/paste for you.

The British police will be for the first time armed with the same advanced weapons as British soldiers use in conflict zones in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Defense has put the contracts for 30,000 modern assault rifles out to tender to major arms producers around the world to supply the “civilian police” with the state-of-the-art weaponry by 2014 under the pretext of fighting terrorists and criminal gangs.

Media reports said the police chiefs are already considering arming their officers with the Canadian-made C8 SFW carbine, the same assault rifle the Special Air Service uses in its high-profile operations.

Some of the features the police want to ensure the new rifles have are being adaptable to use of grenade launchers, silencers and different sights.

There are fears that bringing the battlefield weapons to the streets of London and other cities across Britain could be a prelude to even deeper suppression of protest movements after tackling of demonstrations over the past two years sparked condemnations from human rights groups."

-Curious to see what you guys think on that one, here in America we are somewhat on even ground with law enforcement in that we can buy a gun without having to have a special license or permit to own it. I heard in the UK now a days you even have to have a special license or permit to own an airsoft gun. So, how do you guys feel about the idea of your local officers carrying around assault rifles?

Also, read another article on the Higgs Boson particle that had an interesting point of view. Same web page I got these two from if you're interested, it shouldn't be too hard to find. Basically the author put forth the idea that human consciousness directly influences scientific discovery. I thought he made a good point and had personally never looked at it that way. If you've got a conscious observer of an event writing about it then you would have to think that the observer cannot be totally disconnected from the event. Since his writings are going to be based on his own conscious bias. So essentially all science is based on human, conscious bias. We decide what is/isn't important or relevant and it was a collective human decision that the Higgs Boson particle was a top priority to find etc.. It's an interesting point of view and it also calls into question the standard model of mathematics that we have in place for trying to understand the universe we live in.

Anyway, here's to another day on mania. Hope some of you find this stuff interesting =P.
