Well, son of a Fitch.
The injury bug is once again working its way through the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) ranks, this time claiming Jon Fitch as its latest victim. The Wrestling Observer reports the perennial top welterweight contender has suffered a knee injury in training that will force him to drop out of his scheduled match-up against Aaron Simpson at UFC on FUEL TV 4 on July 11, 2012, in San Jose, California.
Simpson was all set to make his debut at 170-pounds and a search for a replacement opponent is apparently underway.
Fitch was last in action back at UFC 141 on Dec. 30, 2011, in a devastating 12-second knockout loss to Johny Hendricks, just the second time the Fort Wayne, Indiana, native had tasted defeat inside the Octagon.
At 34-years-old, Fitch is still a highly ranked fighter who killed off more than a few prospects in his time. But he was destroyed in his one and only title shot and that, combined with his reputation as a boring fighter who can't sell tickets, puts him at a crossroads in his career.
Fitch has now gone almost two full years without winning a fight while suffering multiple injuries in that same time span. So what does the future hold for the struggling former title challenger?
Stay tuned.
