(Daniel Cormier:The Carlton Banks of MMA...no dis,he's awesome.)
With the news that Shane Carwin expects to be ready to return to MMA this fall,I've wondered about who should welcome him back to the cage. After hearing that Daniel Cormier still had 1 more fight to go on his StrikeForce contract before he can (hopefully) come to the UFC ,and with a lack of real challengers for him over there after his resounding defeat of Barnett,I had an idea...
Since the SF HW division is being integrated into the UFC's in the very-near future anyway, there's no reason to worry about a UFC HW sent over there getting "stuck" in the smaller promotion if they win,or even lose for that matter. That stigma, that "going from the UFC to StrikeForce is a demotion" mentality that has kept UFC Lightweights from stepping into SF to fight Gilbert Melendez,is a non-issue here...no long term commitment to a smaller promotion that GENERALLY SPEAKING has very little top talent to test you.Pay would also be a non-issue,as Carwin is well within SF's budget (for example,Josh Thomson made 200k to fight Melendez)
Though Carwin has been out of action lately,I think that, when back at 100% (or even 95% maybe),the former Interim UFC Heavyweight Champion would probably still be the greatest test of Cormier's career yet,and would be a good gauge to determine where Cormier intially stands in relation to his peers upon entering the UFC.
(Shane Carwin just being a BAWSE.)
Hopefully they can work something out so that the +1 fight on Cormier's contract can just be thrown out and they can bring him straight into the UFC,but IF NOT,then in the meantime just send Carwin over there for a one off,and whatever happens, win or lose for either man, afterwards Carwin returns to the UFC and Cormier says hello to it.Don't think of it as a downgrade for Carwin;think of it as bringing a big piece of the UFC to Daniel Cormier when bringing him to it can't be done yet.
