Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva could possibly lay claim to the immortal moniker, boasting 14 consecutive wins inside the Octagon and never tasting defeat since his promotional debut way back in 2006.
He's defeated every single man who has been put in front of him, which says more than something, even if the "name" value of some of that opposition has not been considered elite. "The Spider" has even toyed around in the Light Heavyweight division and flirted with a "super fight" against Welterweight sensation Georges St. Pierre all to keep things interesting.
Despite all of his many accolades and accomplishments, Silva has had to deal with the thorn in his side also known as Chael Sonnen along the way. As we all know by know, Sonnen pushed Silva to the brink back at UFC 117, but -- like all the rest during Silva's reign of terror -- he ended up hanging his head in defeat.
Sonnen will get his long-awaited shot at redemption -- and perhaps his own slice of immortality -- when he gets locked inside a cage for 25 minutes or less with Silva in the UFC 148 main event on July 7, 2012. Believe your eyes, Maniacs, because there is finally a recent mixed martial arts (MMA) fight worth getting excited about that doesn't include the most likely heir to Silva's legendary throne, Jon Jones.
Enjoy it while it lasts because at 37-years-old, there's no telling what the future holds for Silva. But, hopefully, it includes more of the same, as well as a blockbuster trilogy match.
