Demetrious Johnson won't need surgery after all, but he's still got to get his right hand X-rayed before he's completely out of the woods. Credit: Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE
Well it looks like "Mighty Mouse" will have a chance to save the day a little sooner than expected.
Demetrious Johnson was recently (June 8, 2012) victorious over Ian McCall at UFC on FX 3 to finally set up the inaugural UFC flyweight title bout, but word had come out that the small-scale slugger would need surgery to repair a hernia suffered during the bout.
Obviously, this would have delayed his flyweight title bout against Joseph Benavidez even further, and Benavidez got a bit antsy today, asking Johnson on twitter whether he would need surgery or not.
@JoeJitsu nope no surgery :-)
While this could bump up the date of the first ever UFC flyweight title fight, Johnson is not completely out of the woods just yet.
Before he can resume regular training, the AMC Pankration fighter will still need to get some doctor's clearance for his right hand, which could have been injured during the McCall fight, and that includes an X-Ray.
going to go get X-ray in my right hand to make sure nothing is broke. #instantclassic
Assuming he'll get an "all-clear" sign, perhaps the first ever UFC flyweight champion could be decided before football season starts.
Stranger things have happened.
What's your take on this new development, Maniacs?
Do you want to get this tournament over with as soon as possible so the 125 pound division can move forward? Or would you rather Johnson rest and recuperate a little longer?
Speak up!
