After spending about 16 months on the sidelines, former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight Champion Rich Franklin appears to have kept himself busy, coloring his hair and jumping on the Bieber bandwagon with an unkept mop top.
However, in less than two weeks (June 23, 2012), the 37-year-old future UFC Hall of Fame inductee has got a big Brazilian peixe to pound in the form of Wanderlei Silva in the UFC 147 main event. And he knows it all too well, having been locked inside a cage with him for 15 minutes at UFC 99 little more than three years ago.
Franklin and his buzz cut escaped the Octagon with a unanimous decision win that fateful night in Colgone, Germany; however, a hand injury to Vitor Belfort -- Silva's original opponent -- forced a premature rematch. One that "Ace" feels he can win (again), as long as he avoids the eye of the storm:
"The best way to describe Wanderlei's fighting style: It would be like fighting a tornado. As long as you stay away from the tornado, your safe, but if you get too close to the tornado, it does damage. When you come in, he pulls the trigger. And when he pulls the trigger, things fly. He's throwing multi-punches with his hands, following things up with his knees and he's just dangerous. The best way for me to finish this fight is to not get lazy and get caught up in his game and get caught with something that would otherwise put me on the ground."
Easier said than done, especially if you're busy swiping the hair out of your eyes while an "Axe Murderer" is bearing down with dizzying ferocious hacks. However, perhaps Franklin has a plan for that scenario, too, once he gets ready to throwdown inside the hostile Mineirinho Arena in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
