Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira has fallen on hard times. Can the heavyweight legend get back to his feet and on the right track against Cheick Kongo at UFC 149 on July 21, 2012, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada?
Nogueira will be making his return from a broken arm suffered at the hands of Frank Mir during their bout at UFC 140 on Dec. 10, 2011, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. That means just seven months after he had a titanium plate and 16 screws put in his arm, he'll be banging it out with a French knockout artist.
Doctors did say that he could return as soon as six months after surgery if all went well. Apparently it has and he's headed back to the Octagon for more punishment. Or glory. Perhaps both, even.
Standing in his way is a chiseled 6'4'', 230-pound beast named Cheick Kongo, a kickboxer who was last seen getting his lights turned off by another former PRIDE great, Mark Hunt.
Prior to that, the French fighting sensation had put together a pair of impressive victories over Pat Barry (one of the craziest knockouts of all time) and Matt Mitrione. In doing so, and then losing to Hunt, he simply reaffirmed his status as the heavyweight division's gatekeeper.
And a perfect fight for Nogueira to come back to.
UFC 149 is expected to featured a main event of Jon Jones defending his light heavyweight championship against former Strikeforce 205-pound titleholder Dan Henderson. The bout has not been signed, however, but is strongly rumored to headline the event.
