Everyone's talking about it, so I figured I'd make a thread about it. The Mega Millions jackpot has reached a record high of $640 million and everyone wants to win it. The fun about playing the lottery is dreaming about what you'd do with all that money.
I'll break it down for you. $640 million is a good chunk of change. The cash option is $462 million, before taxes. After taxes that leaves you with about $300.3 million in the bank. Still an incredible amount of money. The annuity option would pay you about $24.6 million a year for 26 years, before taxes. After tax you'd be taking in about $15.9 million a year, for 26 years. That's stupid money. What the hell would you do with it all?
*Edited to update the estimated payout at $640 per the Mega Millions website.I have a fair idea of what I'd do. It doesn't include letting my soon to be ex-wife move back in. I'd take the annuity option, and just let the checks roll in for 26 years. To be honest, I'd probably still work at the same job that I'm at currently. I happen to like what I do, and I happen to be pretty good at it. It's a project that I signed on for, and I'm gonna stick it out. Granted, I'd retire much earlier than I'd ever planned on, but I'll never not be working in some way.
I'd invest in an assortment of stocks and bonds, with varying risk levels. Though I'll be expecting checks for 26 years, it would be in my best interest to keep the money growing as it keeps coming in. I'd also buy a rental property or two, in order to keep myself busy with side projects, and as another way to bring money in.
I'd keep the car I drive because I happen to like it. I'd fix the few things that I haven't already fixed, and I'd keep it up until it actually dies on me. I'd buy myself a GMC 2500 diesel with an 8' bed so I've got myself a nice work truck for all the projects I'll be taking on. I'd also by myself a car to tinker on. I'm leaning towards a Nissan 370Z, or a Honda S2000. I'd do as much of the work on it as I could, because I love being under the hood and putting my own labor into a project.
I'd start a trust fund for my daughter, and put money into it every year when I got my payout. I won't always be around, but I want to make sure she's always taken care of. I want her to have as many opportunities to be as successful as possible with whatever path she chooses in life. If I do win, I'll still be sure to teach her the value of a dollar. I will make sure to teach her that the best path isn't always the easiest, and that hard work pays.
I'd do all the projects I've been dreaming about for renovating my house. I love where I live and I'd stay there. I'd pay off the loan I have on the house, and I'd do as many of the projects as I can with my own two hands.
I'd find a nice plot of land in the middle of nowhere, hopefully ranging around 100 hectares. I'd clear a spot dead center, and build myself a little cabin in total seclusion so I can get away from it all when I need to. It would just be a tiny little cabin with a sleeping loft, and a wood cook stove. No electricity and no running water. I'd bring a chainsaw and an axe, and fell some trees for my firewood. I'd bring supplies, but I'd want to forage and hunt for my food while I was out there.
I've always wanted to wear a suit every day, so I'd find myself a nice tailor and fill a wardrobe with many different suits. I'd make sure to have all of my shirts have French cuffs so I can wear cufflinks, like a boss. I'd also have many different pairs of dress shoes to go with the suits, because a real gentleman matches his shoes to his suit.
I'd be sure to make my way to UFC events fairly often. I haven't been to a live UFC show, and I'd love to feel the excitement in the arena. I'd also be sure to get back into training more regularly.
I'd get the tattoos I've been putting on hold. I want to sleeve my left arm, and also do some torso pieces. As well as some leg work...
I feel like I'd be able to ramble on and on here, so I'm gonna cut it short. I'll ask you maniacs again, what would you do with $540 million?
