Once the hottest thing going in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight division not too long ago, Rick Story will look to re-ignite his fading star when he returns to action against Rich Attonito at UFC on FX 4.
The mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion today (March 21, 2012) announced the 170-pound scrap, which will take place at the Revel Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, N.J., on June 22, 2012.
Story is in the midst of a two-fight losing skid, dropping back-to-back unanimous decisions to Charlie Brenneman and Martin Kampmann, respectively. Prior to the setbacks, "Horror" reeled off six straight victories, including decision wins over top division stalwarts Johny Hendricks and Thiago Alves.
His performance in the "Garden State" will go a long way toward establishing whether or not he was a contender or just a pretender.
Attonito, meanwhile, has also struggled recently, losing two of his last three fights inside the Octagon.
Jake Hecht just took him out via technical knockout at UFC 140 in Dec. 2011 and Dave Branch beat him on the judges scorecards at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 12 Finale almost exactly a year earlier. Sandwiched between the losses was a unanimous decision win over Daniel Roberts, his third such accomplishment with the promotion.
Nonetheless, fighters are only as good as their last fights, and both men will desperately look to turn their fortunes around sooner rather than later, starting in the "Las Vegas of the East."
UFC on FX 4 will feature a Lightweight showdown between Gray Maynard vs. Clay Guida in the main even of the evening. It will also mark the welterweight debut of Dan Miller, who takes on Ricardo Funch in main card action, among other bouts.
