UFC 143 payouts and salaries: Nick Diaz leads with event-high $200,000 payday

Ufc81-bonus_medium_medium

UFC 143 fighter payouts for those who competed at the "Diaz vs. Condit" pay-per-view (PPV) event this past Saturday night (Feb. 4, 2012) from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, were released to MMAmania.com earlier today by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

As expected, headlining fighters Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit were the top earners of the night. "The Natural Born Banker" is now depositing $110,000 for taking home a unanimous decision victory over his befuddled foe, who will be cashing his check for $200,000 in the Stockton Security Exchange later this week.

UFC import/export extraordinaire Fabricio Werdum was also in triple figures ($100,000) thanks to the Muay Thai clinic he put on Roy Nelson. "Big Country" can buy a lot of Whoppers with the $20,000 he earned in defeat. Rounding out the big bucks was welterweight bad boy Josh Koscheck ($146,000) and middleweight Ed Herman ($62,000).

But that's not all.

Here is the complete list of UFC 143 salaries and payouts:

Star-divide

Carlos Condit: $110,000 ($55,000 to show, $55,000 to win)
Nick Diaz: $200,000
Condit def. Diaz via unanimous decision

Fabricio Werdum: $100,000 (no win bonus)
Roy Nelson: $20,000

Josh Koscheck: $146,000 ($73,000 to show, $73,000 to win)
Mike Pierce: $20,000
Koscheck def. Pierce via split decision

Renan Barao: $22,000 ($11,000 to show, $11,000 to win)
Scott Jorgensen: $20,500
Barao def. Jorgensen via unanimous decision

Ed Herman: $62,000 ($31,000 to show, $31,000 to win)
Clifford Starks: $8,000

Dustin Poirier: $24,000 ($12,000 to show, $12,000 to win)

Matt Brown: $30,000 ($15,000 to show, $15,000 to win)
Chris Cope: $8,000
Brown def. Cope via technical knockout

Matt Riddle: $30,000 ($15,000 to show, $15,000 to win)
Henry Martinez: $6,000

Rafael Natal: $20,000 ($10,000 to show, $10,000 to win)
Michael Kuiper: $6,000
Natal def. Kuiper via unanimous decision

Stephen Thompson: $12,000 ($6,000 to show, $6,000 to win)
Dan Stittgen: $5,000
Thompson def. Stiigen via knockout

The total disclosed payroll for UFC 143: "Diaz vs. Condit" was $880,500.

Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include fight bonuses, sponsorships, percentages and other unofficial payments such as PPV bonuses, among others. It also does not include deductions for expenses such as insurance, taxes, etc.

For example, the UFC often hands out extra cash for "Fight of the Night," "Knockout of the Night" and "Submission of the Night." To check out these figures for UFC 143 click here.

Strange...

Diaz spent the last few years wanting more money and a better opportunity then he finally gets it and retires.

he isnt going to retire,

how many times has he said he is going to quit MMA to go box or because he is just pissed at the time, a couple times at least. he is one of the biggest draws in mma and is still part of that three man mix at the top himself, george and carlos. He isnt going away unless Dana gives him the boot, which prolly wont happen, Nick Diaz = $$$ for the UFC!

It was reported he made a mill in this fight, if so, he will retire.

After Saturday night

I no longer need to see that fight. GSP could easily recreate Condits game plan and incorporate takedowns. I think its a fairly easy win for the francophone

I was never excited to see that fight in the first place(hype is what built anticipation among fans)

I wanted to see diaz face a top WW not cyborg, daley, shamrock or noons. If diaz beat condit then I probably would have wanted to see diaz vs gsp.

Agreed

agains Nick is left behind by the elite of the division. Nothing changed from his last stint in the UFC.

Naw, he just hates Diaz with a passion. Personally, I don't understand. Diaz is a product of his environment and was not blessed with book smarts. He tries to finish fights and is almost always exciting.

I don't hate Diaz

I hate Diaz fans. Big difference, my friend. While I find Nick’s showboating deplorable, I like watching his fights. I even picked him in the money pool (I never picked BJ once, lol)

What I can’t stand are the people who go so far overboard for him to actually say he was robbed and dominated Condit on Saturday. It was a close fight. I need to troll the trolls and Mike was a convenient bystander that was willing to play.

That's a sound perspective

He’s good to have in the upper echelon, but people need to come back to reality. The amount of attention he is getting is not in proportion to his portfolio. Wait a sec. Isn’t that the exact definition of over-rated?

by DH. on Feb 6, 2012 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

Diaz lost the fight plain and simple,

he got out pointed. I hated the way Carlos fought, like Nick said “baby kicks” problem is that they all score and Carlos threw so many more strikes than Nick that it really wasnt that close of a fight. I thought Carlos ran from nick all night as well, stayed to the outside and outscored him with little pitterpats. I understand Nick not being happy but he clearly lost. shouldve threw more punches homie! it was hard for him to land anything because of how evasive Carlos was or how much he ran, see it how you want. im a huge diaz fan!

by HEELHOOK on Feb 6, 2012 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

Picked Carlos by UD in the Free Pool!

even though nick is one of my favs, if I thought he was that great i wouldve picked him to win. I also wont argue the fact that even though he has fought and won alot, the list of guys hes beaten isnt that great.

by HEELHOOK on Feb 6, 2012 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

I think I understand why you say he "ran"

but what was the alternative? It seems that it would be to stand with back to the fence and get blasted. Diaz comes forward no matter what, and NEEDS to trap the opponent between himself and the fence to win. Carlos did the only thing possilbe that was conducive to winning. Get out, reset and exchange. I can’t agree that they were pitter patter punches for points.

by KO's and Knee's on Feb 7, 2012 1:48 AM EST up reply actions

why? what's the point?

everyone is bitching carlos didn’t fight nick

gsp vs nick would be the same gsp outstriking him and keeping his back off the cage
gsp is way more technical than nick
nick can’t get gsp backed up to cage to swing wild he will just walk forward and land little to nothing
mix in gsps takedowns and you have the same outcome as saturnday night every time

so why bitch about wanting to see it
diaz will be outclassed and then cry he didn’t fight me

from what I understand the fighters off that show sign very similar contracts

12

5 of them are losses, not sure what your point is. Roys been around for awhile too, not to mention hes a super popular fighter that everyone seems to know and love. Just sayin, theres no good reason for ed to make more than him win or lose.

by HEELHOOK on Feb 6, 2012 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

I'm just saying Herman would have signed a contract when he started with the UFC

Then that contract would have expired and he would have probably negotiated for more money…and then that contract probably expired, etc….

Roy is probably still in his first contract…it has nothing to do with how popular Roy has become

There is plenty good reason for Ed to make more…

Roys had 6

but was well known and popular coming into the UFC, he puts way more ass’s in seats. Big Country is a money earner for the UFC people pay to watch him fight, i honestly dont think you can say the same for ED. Sorry Ed I totally respect your game, you just shouldnt make more than roy. IMO it just doesnt seem right. If its a contractual thing because of TUF fine, that was my question to begin with.

by HEELHOOK on Feb 6, 2012 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

"6 figure contract" sounds great

But not a lot of guys realize it’s over 3 yrs and 3 fights per year.

I believe it’s $16k/16 for fights 1-3
20/20 for 4-6
Then 25/25 or 30/30 for 7-9.

losers make excuses, winners make it happen...

i figured diaz woukd have pressed the action more in the chamoionship rds soley to get that win bonus

Maybee he really does need to reevaluate moving forward.

Is it safe to assume had diaz won he could have walked away with a 400 k purse

it’s safer to assume he would not have a win bonus like when he beat Penn

You're a dork...

You said he likely wouldn’t have gotten a win bonus against Penn…

I’m saying it’s possible he could have because he was fighting Condit for the interim title…against Penn it was just a regular fight…being sarcastic doesn’t make you seem witty…it makes you seem like a kid

Contracts do not change if you are fighting for a belt.

by Poll_Tax on Feb 6, 2012 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

So what you're saying is...

It is completely impossible that Diaz could have received a contract for a fight with Condit that stipulated there would be a win bonus if he won?

If that is what you’e saying then alright…if not, kiss my ass

And the only one making assumptions is you…I never once made a fucking assumption

the higher paid fighters that come from another big promotion tend to get big guaranteed paydays with no win bonus. Diaz, Cung Le, Werdum, fighters that came over from Pride, etc.

this should be a lesson learned for the fertittas

Always give nick a monetary incentive to win, if they would have offered a 200k win bonus he would have faught harder, the guy wants to get paid and you cant blame him

by dia mette on Feb 6, 2012 1:10 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

and if there is not a $$$ win bonus

At least include a swimming pool and a gazeebo if he wins. Nick would have finished that arm lock in the 5th if he knew he would get a doughboy swimming pool with floats included

by dia mette on Feb 6, 2012 1:24 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I don’t know. Some fighters believe that it’s offering the win bonuses that causes boring fights. Guys that know they’ll get a double sized paycheck if they win and they go in with the gameplan to fight not to lose. We end up getting those boring ass lay n pray fights or guys try to win on points only and never go for a finish.

I certaintly agree that Nelson and various other fighters are underpaid, but Nelson is not and will not be a top hw in a million years.

Werdum, Overeem, Dos Santos, Barnett, Velasquez, Cormier, Antonio Silva, Frank Mir, Big Nog, Shane Carwin, Cheik Kongo, even a retired Lesnar etc. He would probably loose to Brendan Schaub the second time.

He is just fat and a lot of fat douches love to relate to him and overhype his abilities

Roy Nelson

I’d love to know how much he did “actually” walk away with tbh, I think if you take his fight and his ability to absorb an absolutely obscene amount of Werdum’s knee, off that card, the card would have been very weak from an entertainment standpoint. I thought Zuffa were all about paying the dudes who people actually want to see fight, I can say this without doubt I would much rather watch Fat Boy Roy get totally pummeled for three rounds than watch Josh Koscheck run around the octogan for fear of getting his orbital punched ever again. And when roy does fight again Ill be absolutely dying to see the fight. Lets also remember that Werdum easily trapped and subbed Fedor, the supposed greatest of all time!! He couldn’t do that to roy even though he clean smashed his face in… That says a lot about roy and his abilities I think.
