Stephen Thompson - Someone to Watch

I'm sick of just discussing the main event, lets talk about something positive.

Last night on the Facebook undercard Stephen Thompson impressed me.

I had him picked to win by KO but not in the fashion he did nor as quickly.

Mma_e_thompson_b1_576_medium

Star-divide

Thompsonwin_medium

He's now 6-0 with 3 KO/TKO's and 1 submission. He's a black belt in Japanese Jiujitsu and and blue belt in BJJ. He's a black belt in Kempo Karate. He trains under 8th degree BJJ black belt Carlos Machado(His brother in law). So in addition to his fantastic striking, he can grapple as well. Link to the MMA Fighting Article about him prior to the fight. This guy is 28 years old, he's still pretty young and he will move up the latter quickly. Who do you want to see him matched up against?

idk yet

Stittgen looked horrible. Thompson looked impressive but i would like to see it against someone a little more quality. I cant get over how shitty stittegen looked. Maybe put him up against riddle next. Its a step up but not a top 20 guy. So it still allows him to progress slowly without throwing him to the wolvs.

I agree

Stittgen didn’t look as good as I expected him to, I thought Thompson would KO him later in the fight. But still, the striking of Thompson is awesome.

Reminds me of a guy I train with, he is a lot like that throwing hook kicks, getting out of the way. I’m more of a boxer who uses Muay Thai kicks mixed in. Every time I step forward I eat a shot that’s faster than I what I can throw. Only way to counter I found is to get in close after eating a few shots and force him back, problem is he can circle away and I eat legs kicks like mad.

There's a guy who runs a small promotion up where I live named Zack Burns

he’s like 8-1 amateur who’s training for his first pro fight in May. He stands just like Thompson does, hands real low and has great kicks. Throws hook kicks, ax kicks and has good power in his hands too.

Guys who are fast like that are great to watch if they’re used to that style.

yeah it’s all skill based, but one second of bad luck, a slip, a missed strike and you go off balance, one can argue for luck as well… and some attribute luck to the universe/God.

I'm sure he'll adjust if he fights a better boxer.

but 57-0 with 40 KO’s in pro kickboxing/full contact Karate matches isn’t someone who can’t deal with punches.

I thought his performance was good, but I also agree that his opponent looked like he had no clue of how to deal with such an unusual stance. I would like to see him against somone who isn’t perplexed by his fighting style, although that could take a few fights because I mean, Machida had quite some time before he was really tested.

As for the vote, I said yes, but let’s see how he does against a wrestler. I’d like to see how his jiu jitsu is against someone with good top control, and who also has a chin that can take a beating.

That leads to a question… how does that sort of side on stance get dealt with in terms of takedowns?

MMA is like a puzzle, it's just a matter of finding a solution to each situation.

by The Ruiner on Feb 5, 2012 6:44 PM EST reply actions

The advantage to that stance is double legs are difficult and it seems to make it easy to get out of the way

Guys who I train with who use that style are really difficult to catch.

I really hope they give him a mid tier wrestler next. I want to see if he can keep it standing and use his stand up against him.

Couple times I've dived in I got caught with hook kicks

Thompson threw a couple of them last night, but I don’t think any really connected. Think of it like a said kick only they place it in front of you and hook their heel back around, not a ton of power, but they do damage. I hot busted right in the mouth and it opened my lip up.

Interesting. I looked on youtube for an example of a hook kick, it’s quite nice to look at.

I was thinking about getting a book to learn about striking. I looked at reviews for several and the one that appealed to me was the Anderson Silva book because it seems to be for beginners for the most part, with a lot of explanations provided for why you should do certain things. I don’t think I want to go to a class, more just learn about good technique so I know what I am looking at.

What’s your opinion of that book, if you’ve read any of it?

MMA is like a puzzle, it's just a matter of finding a solution to each situation.

by The Ruiner on Feb 5, 2012 7:51 PM EST up reply actions

Oh I got ya, learning to technique and understanding what you're looking at can be different

but at the same time I felt like I learned the most when I learned what they feel like and how to defend against strikes or how to counter. It really helped when I started sparring/rolling on a regular basis.

I’ve never looked at Silvas book, the only books I’ve ever looked at was Royce Gracie’s volumes on bottom and top games of BJJ, read one of Bruce Lee’s books, and a few glances at a book on Judo throws and stuff like that.

I feel like I learn the most when I have a teacher but watching as a fan and understanding are different I guess. That makes sense i hope.

Yeah, I think I get what you’re saying. The best way to learn is from experience. To be honest that’s the best way I learn things too. I just figured I’d like to read some books on striking before I’d ever go to a class. Not that I’m hugely interested in taking a class (I’ve tried boxing with my partner and my reaction times are pretty poor) but I thought a book would be a nice way to get some beginner tips other than knowing to throw your body behind a punch to make a decent impact.

I guess I want to learn everything about the sport, a bit at a time.

MMA is like a puzzle, it's just a matter of finding a solution to each situation.

by The Ruiner on Feb 5, 2012 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

with boxing it's half muscle memory, not just your reaction speed.

they don’t have proper head movement with instinct, it’s from hours of slipping drills.

One of my favorites was one person wears a body pad and a boxing glove on the lead hand with a pad on the back hand. they throw the jab you slip past on the outside and hit a jab to the inside followed by a right to the pad. you drill, you drill you drill. It becomes instinct, it becomes muscle memory.

Don’t give up lol. :P

I wondered about that, because there are movements I remember learning from when I was a kid that I can still do now. Like skipping. As an adult you just don’t skip any more, unless you are acting like a tool, but after not skipping at all for like 13 years I found I could still do it a little while ago.

It’s pretty amazing how the body can memorise how to do something like that.

I do have a bit of a bad habit though. When my partner had the pads and I was wearing the gloves I would hit the pads a couple of times and he would swipe the pad across the top of my head, if you catch my drift. Instead of ducking down my instinct is to move backwards. It’s better than not moving at all, but still it’s not very advantageous to move back instead of ducking and throwing a strike.

MMA is like a puzzle, it's just a matter of finding a solution to each situation.

by The Ruiner on Feb 5, 2012 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

yes

but natural human instinct is to move from danger which is why people who flinch when someone swings at them aren’t pussies, it’s human normal and unless you actually think I’m going to stand here and possibly get hit in the face, you are probably going to move.

Only way to get better is to practice. Hell, running is about technique, everything we do athletically is. If you’re interested keep going and learn to move forward and to the side, slipping to the outside of the strike generally.

Basic is 1, 2, 3. So: Jab, Right Cross, left hook. Your reaction would be slip to the right, slip to the left, slight drop and move right under the left hook. Practice over and over. Really simple once you get used to it.

Maine! The home of many a Stephen King novel. I bet you get that all the time.

I used to read Stephen King when I was a teenager and in my early 20s. I didn’t stop reading his work for any particular reason, I just sort of stopped reading anything other than the occasional horror anthology and magazines.

MMA is like a puzzle, it's just a matter of finding a solution to each situation.

Marine* shit

damn typos…..

but yeah King is alright, I actually got a copy of Dreamcatcher for Christmas.

I don't know if Thompson would be ready for Silva

but someday, maybe two or three more fights for Thompson…

Ya true that

But it’s definitely a possible matchup to look forward to in the future. Who do you wanna see Thompson fight next?

by Rob2507 on Feb 5, 2012 7:42 PM EST up reply actions

Charlie Brenneman? Might be too high up the food chain

but I want him tested against a wrestler.

Matt Brown, he’s a better striker than Brown and Brown might want to test the ground game…

Carlos Prater? I think that could be interesting…

I like the Amir Sodallah fight possibly….

Hmmm I think he has a better record than Sodallah so maybe someone a little higher up, I do like the Matt Brown idea, or what about Lance Benoist? another 6-0 welterweight with one ufc win?

by Rob2507 on Feb 5, 2012 8:08 PM EST reply actions

Amir is 6-3, could be a good test

Lance Benoist…. I like that. I would take Thompson in that though… better striker

Because of Thompson’s traditional Jiujitsu black belt and his blue belt in BJJ I don’t know if Benoist who is a purple belt would have a huge advantage….even with is 4 submission wins.

I like that idea though. Is Lance attached to anyone right now?

Na not that I know of, that would be a much better test for thompson than Stittgen. So I’m thinkin Benoist, Sodallah, or Matt Riddle who just popped into my head lol

by Rob2507 on Feb 5, 2012 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

Well, Stitts was 7-1, but he's a grappler, he was too slow to get Thompson down...

I have never seen footage on Benoist but from what I’ve found I like the fight. And he’s not attached to anyone right now for a fight.

Stephen Thompson is a training partner of GSP

Awesome debut by Thompson, an even better finnish yet. I have heard about this guy being in mma now for almost 2 years. The only reason i have heard of him is that he has been a training partner of GSP for a couple of years. George said last year when Stephen was 3-0, to watch out for him, because he saw him doing some really big things in mma. No doubt he was on the UFC’s radar, but i am just as sure that George has been telling Dana and Joe Silva that they should sign this guy up. Sure he trained mostly stand up for George, but i’m thinking he must have helped Thompson out with some wrestling. Having a black belt for a brother in law can only help as well.

I agree

I hadn’t really heard much about him until I starting researching this last event. He’s got the skill set to make an impact though. Who would you pair him up with?

Bruce Lee Roy

How about this kid against Alex (Bruce LeeRoy) . Never mind different weight class.

by kimura pain on Feb 6, 2012 1:24 PM EST reply actions

135 against 170 ummmm

even then the skill set is pretty wide. Thompson is the much more experienced and skilled striker….

As far as who Leeroy should fight next? I have no idea….
