We're only hour out from what looks like it could be a a very good UFC event. Discuss your picks for the event here if you feel like doing so.
Here are my picks:
Here are links to my preview/predictions.
* An update on Henry Martinez: He is a division I wrestler(Oklahoma State) and a black belt in BJJ. He might prove quite the challenge to Riddle. I think that he holds great promise as a fighter, but he is fighting on such short notice in a higher weight class than what he's used to. Thanks to Aintnosunshine for the tip on Martinez for anyone who wasn't aware of Martinez's full background.
* Stephen Thompson update: He's a black belt in Japanese Jiujitsu and and blue belt in BJJ. He trains under 8th degree BJJ black belt Carlos Machado. So in addition to his fantastic striking, he can probably grapple as well. Link to the MMA Fighting Article discussing it.

jorgenson and big country are good upset picks also. im liking the main card a lot and keep reading people hating on it.
Main event alone will be better than the fox card.

I liked the fox card
the main card brought it down though.

The whole card has interesting fights on it
the problem is how few people really take the time to find out about who’s fighting.
Many fans, even “hardcore,” only like the fights with fighters they recognize. Every fighter was unknown at some point.

One of the best parts about this sport is following a guy as he progresses from undercard to main card.
I remember watching Jorgenson and condit in WEC and its almost rewarding to see them doing so well.

Anyone who’s had a career and has built it up.
I remember when I first really thought of Condit as someone to watch was his KO of Dan Hardy. I had heard of him, but I wasn’t as close of a follower of the sport until late 2009. I have been watching since before the first season of TUF, but I was really casual. Really started following it when I was in Japan, I didn’t have a lot to do and it because a much bigger interest. Now I read or write something about MMA just about every day.

Condit was the man in WEC, every WEC card was full of great fights and so many upsets,
but I’ll admit I didn’t expect so many fighters to be successful in the UFC, I remember thinking Chael was horrible, I also thought Pulver would dominate when he got there.

I remember thinking that Condit would get slaughtered by coming over the to UFC……he’s done just the opposite. The LW’s have done extremely well. Bendo, Pettis, Cowboy have all performed well.

70% of the best fighters in the world are in the UFC at any given time
the other 30% are spread across the smaller promotions, DREAM, Bellator, LFC, and maybe ONE FC in the future. Another group of that 30% are probably not even fighting in MMA, but instead doing Karate Tourney, Kickboxing or BJJ grappling. The next great talent can come from anywhere.
Not sure if I made sense to myself there….

The more popular the sport gets the more children will grow up training and the fighters 10-15 years from now will put todays HOFers to shame.

you already have olympic level athletes
those are the best in the world period, I don’t know if that’s accurate that there will be better athletes… just more rounded out with less focus on single skill like Lesnar was or Mirko CroCop was in his early career.

but that’s what lot of olympic level athletes could have done if they chose too. The worlds fastest sprinters decided they would rather play baseball than run track, they would probably be in the world series instead.

And his wrestling skills were all still there. At his age now his wrestling tecknuqe is all but gone, he had to rely on just rushing his opponents.

He had heart in the Carwin fight to come back and win, after that in the Cain and Overeem fight it seemed to have left him.

Lesnars chin was fine
it was the fact that he didn’t have the mental edge required to take strikes. The heavyweight division is miles ahead of where it was only a couple years ago.
Stipe Mioci comes to mind, great striking, grappling.
Hell, dos Santos fits that bill, solid BJJ and great boxing. It’s constantly getting better.

No it isn’t miles ahead AT ALL. Guys like Mir are still competing at the highest level, as is Barnett etc.
Outside of Cain and JDS, the HW division is pretty much the same.

not the best athlete, you’ll always have guys in martial arts that have high overall skill sets because technique can overcome speed, power, athleticism: Guillard vs. Miller comes to mind.
The heavyweight division really is getting better, I choose to remain positive because it does have a good outlook

It isn’t at all. Overeem, who has been around forever is fighting for the title.
Barnett could come over and beat most current UFC HW’s.
Werdum is still beating guys coming up and ranked in the top 10. The HW division sucks.

Bas Rutten had it right
he doesn’t throw a ton of combinations to protect his chin. JDS is faster and throws combinations and he’ll catch Overeem on the chin and KO him early man.

but when you talk about techniques he pointed out the biggest flaw over Overeem, his speed and his chin, something that JDS will exploit

I think you're underplaying a lot of their abilities
Werdum has evolved from being nothing but grappling to being a solid(not great) striker. There’s a reason he’s top ten and it’s not because the division is shallow.
Barnett, is one of the last really good catch wrestlers on the planet. Striking sucks, but his grappling(high skill set) will keep him relevant.

Not at all, the fact that these veterans are still competing at the highest level tells you all you need to know about the HW division.
In every other division the younger fighters are coming up at a faster pace. What are the chances of Shogun winning the belt again? Chuck? Slim, because the sport has evolved past them.
In the HW division these guys are still getting by..

his knees aren’t the greatest but he honestly still has a chance at a title again, possibly at 185 truth be told.
But his skill set his high and he still is among the best in the world. Just my opinion though

It is high, but all you need to do is watch his fight with Jones and compare the styles. Jones was more dynamic, that’s what the younger gen are going to bring.

Roy Nelson and Mir are both
very good grapplers. Roy has a big right hand and Mir has…. so so striking. But with their overall skill sets they are still solid fighters.
Beltran… he never had a chance to fight for the title, not enough ability mixed with not enough athletic ability.
