Rampage Jackson: I'm a street fighter, not a martial artist (Video)
"I couldn't give a rat's ass if I beat Ryan Bader or not, I just want to put on the best show the world has ever seen. I never claimed to be a martial artist or a guy who's good at everything. I'm a street fighter. There's a lot of things I don't care about. I don't care to know what my opponent's doing, I don't care to know his skills or stuff like that, because I'm a brawler. Ya know, a street fight you just walk up to the guy and start a fight. You ain't got no tape on this guy."
Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Jackson doesn't care about beating Ryan Bader, can't be bothered with watching any tape on his opponent and just wants to brawl. He also wants to put on an amazing show for his Japanese fans when he returns to the "Land of the Rising Sun" at UFC 144 this Saturday night (Feb. 25, 2012) at the Saitama Super Arena in Japan. Unfortunately his approach to this fight -- and an amazing performance -- may be mutually exclusive. Anyone think "Rampage" is just talking it up for the cameras? Or is he really going into his contest against "Darth" with a street fight mentality?

See most people will think he doesn’t care when he does. He just doesn’t put so much on the line for a fight. Yes, it is a mixed martial arts fight but when you get in that nita nd gritty, it is a fight. The better fighter wins and a lot of what a fighter is based on instinct.
Rampage is comfortable with violence and that is a skill.

The better fighter wins
If we have learned anything from the last 3 or 4 years with the emergence of successful camps and gameplanning is that the better, more talented fighter does not always win, but the smarter fighter, who is better able to implement his gameplan, wins almost all the time. Especially in the lower weight classes where one-punch power dminishes as you get lighter.

Yeah but being smart even in the crossfire means you are the better fighter. GSP is the better fighter than Hardya nd a stree fight to the death, i’d take GSP over anyone he has fought.

This imaginary street fight rationale that has popped up over the last few months doesn’t make any sense to me. This is a sport with rules, and people apply their talents to the rules better than others. Lesser fighters have won countless times over fighters that are more physically gifted but choose to oevrlook their opponent (Rampage v Forrest), not train as hard as they should have (BJ versus anyone he lost to pretty much), or just generally didn’t care enough (Nick Diaz v Condit).
It isn’t a street fight, so making comparisons the possibilities, as if this were a street fight, are no better than arguing about the fictional P4P or who was the greatest of all time. Nothing gets accomplished.

Page is exagerrating
It’s obvious from watching the Machida fight and the JBJ fight that he does try to game plan and study his opponent and employ a strategy in the cage. This is just Page talkin.

But the comparisons are understandable

depends
when saying that the men fight, sure.
When saying…if this were a street fight, Nick Diaz would have beaten Condit…then no, it is not understandable. There are too many variables to consider. The lack of rules being the main variable.
There is no set space so Condit’s continuous movement could not have been contained at all. Condit landed many leg kicks. For an experienced fighter, an adjustment to go from thigh to nuts is very simple. Intentional nut shot kicks from Condit could very well be life threatening. There are a plethora of weapons lying around on any given street. ETC, ETC, ETC.
There are rules for a reason. Attempting to make oneself feel better about “their” fighter by imagining scenarios where said fighter could have or should have won is unproductive to me. It makes no sense.

You’ve never had one of those imaginary scenario conversations with your buddies? Ever? The one that starts with;
“Would you nail that chick over there if; 1 – nobody would ever find out; 2 – you were in a bar in Wawa and you were pinned and she was offering to give you a ride back to where you were staying; 3- you are single (assuming you are married or have a girlfriend).”

if you don’t finish the guy, you didn’t win a fight.
Which is the crux of the “street fight” argument, yet it goes against what the basis of this sport truly is…determining winners within the rules set forth. It is impossible to create an environment that allows fights to go on until one person is finished. No chance of it being sanctioned ever, and very good possibility of fighter death eventually.
Remember when boxing was 15 round championships? Until they determined that the guys who died, died because of the late round blows.
Obviously I like to watch finishes, we all do, but I also like to see who wins, even if that means using the rules to exact that victory. I like watching chess games, that I am not playing in, as well.

I think "lavish" is a bit much
but I think that there should not be win bonuses and only finish bonuses on top of SOTN and KOOTN. I also think the the yellow card should be used with the 20% purse penalty. I also think that knees to the head of opponents, on their back but not when the aggressor is standing, should be allowed. (essentially allow knees to the head when the fighter has two combined points of contact one must be a knee, one must be an elbow…think North/South position)
Mania is not quite Mania without Dakatak. Come back soon, Dak.

Think that would turn out pretty nasty
Imagine if Lesnar or JBJ could knee someone in the face while they’re in north/south position on the ground. You see the kind of dmg Jones does with just elbows, if you give a guy like him the ability to throw knees down there someone is likely to die or end up seriously injured.

That is a tough call...
But I am for that being allowed as well. There are risks and all of the fighters know the risks before they step in to the ring.
It really boils down to seeing who is the best. I know without a doubt, that I would not step into a ring with Brock or JBJ… it just wouldnt happen because I know that I would probably get seriously hurt for no reason. They are better than me and I know that… if I felt like I was on their level and wanted to test it out, then I would know the risks involved before I stepped in there

Some of those fights were just plain brutal. Look at Wand stomping the shit out of Yuki Kondo for instance, guy is lucky to have walked away from that in one piece.

yet you can double-plum a guy, pull down his head and knee him in the face. Why is that not illegal?

At least if they're in the standing position the guy getting knee'd can fall
And the ref can step in at that point, but if they’re on the ground who knows how many unnecessary blows to the top/back of the head someone is going to eat before the fight gets called.

“Which is the crux of the "street fight" argument, yet it goes against what the basis of this sport truly is…”
You mean, what this sport has become.
The modern era of MMA wasn’t born out of points fighting.
You see a lot of decisions at UFC #1 ?
The rules were instituted to try and bring legitimacy to the sport that was being referred to as ‘human cockfighting’.
Now we have to deal with Greg Jackson turning matches into a karate tournament.
Watching 2 BJJ guys go at it, good.
Watching 2 wrestlers try to out-hump each other, bad.
I think Greg Jackson takes unmerited attack. He is training his guys to win in the UFC. He has Jon Jones who hasn’t went to a decision in over four fights, has a heck of a KO artist in Brian Stann, Carlos Condit and GSP are fighting for the gold-two guys he has help mould.
I agree with this portion

Feel free to create a “no-holds-barred” fighting concept. Remember that it took the Fertita’s over $50million to bring it back from the brink and actually make it a sport that is still not accepted in cetain states.

GSP should fight Nick, Ellenburger, Hendricks, then you have Rory and a few others
LWH doesnt really have them. Only real good guy coming up appears to be Gustav

Then a few things changed and now you can name 7 challengers that’s how the sport works.Same will happen at LHW

Yeah that circle is a bit dysfunctional
Shogun
Wand
Hendo
Page
It’s hard to rank them.
Either way, lets just see how he goes against Bader.

For sure, this should be a win. I wish Ortiz had beat Lil Nog..i wanted to see if Hendo could KO Ortiz.
The only thing that could hurt Page is his perosnality and the losses to Forrest/ Saku. No shame getting destroyed by Shoguna nd Wand x2.

Yeah agreed.
Although I’d love to see Nog vs. Hendo.
Hendo turned that down for some reason..

Lil Nog is dangerous and maybe they offered it when he could’ve snuck in against Bones.

Hendo matches up well with him too but i don’t know if Nog’s chin is as good as Shogun’s.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hendo got subbed again.

Total slaughter
IMO, Bader does not match up well with Page at all.

Doesn’t pose the same speed and threat of punching. He has good power but he doesn’t have Henod’s power+predictability. I also liked how Hendo mixed it up with dirty boxing against Shogun, nice uppercuts.

Be kinda cool to see Bader climb the hill and dethrone Jones.

Can't do it, he's not as explosive
And Rashad is a lot better at transitioning from striking to TD’s, he’s got great timing and he sets up his shots really nice. Bader doesn’t have the footwork to be in and out and frustrate Page by being elusive and he doesn’t set up the TD’s well enough for him to wrestle his way to a decision. There’s only a couple people in the world that could plant their feet and stand toe to toe with Page trading bombs and Bader isn’t one of those guys. I can’t see how he wins.

Page is more civil than people give him credit for.
I think he just enjoys that thuggish notoriety.

Like Nick Diaz, he ain’t fake. he doesn’t pretend to be nice when he’s grumpy. Wears his heart on his sleeve.
