To Your Health Maniacs: The Cleanse

Now that everyone has been taking their cayenne pepper shots and cooking with it, I will address how it came to find itself into my regular diet. I mentioned learning more about cayenne pepper through doing a cleanse and was met with skepticism, curiosity and acceptance. What is it? What are the benefits? The drawbacks? This is my experience.

Star-divide

Firstly, everyone is different. Different bodies, different goals, different mentalities. A cleanse is a personal choice, but sometimes a necessary one. There are several different types of cleanses, probably hundreds. The consensus top 3 are The Master Cleanse, Isagenix and Colonix.

I had been feeling sluggish, with several stomach problems and starting to notice it took entirely too long for me to wake in the mornings. I had chalked it up to travelling to countries in Asia and to Mexico, but the bad feelings persisted. I was recommended to attempt a cleanse. My goal was to eliminate waste from my colon, kidneys and liver. I also wanted to detoxify my body. After doing my homework I went with The Master Cleanse (or Lemonade Diet), and this is the one I recommend.

Images_medium

The Master Cleanse consists of the ease-in process, the lemonade diet (MINIMUM 10 ten days for the proper cleansing) and the ease-out period.

The 3 day ease-in can be skipped, but it is to prepare body and mind to not eating food for a period of time. Day 1 is a living food diet (think vegetarian), day 2 juicing, soups and broths and day 3 is only orange juice.

Now the cleanse begins. You will need cayenne pepper (which you already have), lemons, pure maple syrup, and pure water. Here is the recipe:

2 Tablespoons Fresh Lemon Juice

2 Tablespoons Rich Maple Syrup

1/10 Teaspoon of Cayenne Pepper Powder – or to taste (as much as you can stand)

8 ounces (250 milliliters of Pure Water)

Six to twelve glasses a day (I drank 8) and all the water you desire for a minimum of ten days. It's a simple concoction, however some things need clarification. Fresh lemons should not be straight from the fridge, enzymes are dormant in the fridge, and they are needed. Take them out the night before. The maple syrup must be grade B for cleansing purposes (the darker kind). Cayenne pepper should be around 90,000 H.U.

Now since you will not be getting the needed fiber, the other ingredients to this cleanse are a natural herbal laxative and sea salt. Take the laxative at bed time to produce a movement in the morning upon waking. You are then good to drink your mix. Remember your movements will be mostly liquid from now on. Laxative-tablets_medium

Now for the sea salt, the SWF (salt water flush) was by far the most demanding part of this process for me.

Using 1 liter BPA Free Water Bottle and your teaspoon measure, mix a solution consisted of :

celtic_sea_salt

  • Sea Salt - 2 teaspoons
  • And Pure Water – 1 quart of warm water

Sea salt is not digestible. You know if you are ever lost at sea, you can't drink the ocean water. This solution flushes your system. I was abroad at the time, and could not find sea salt that had not been iodized, making it regular table salt ( DO NOT use regular table salt-it WON'T work), not to mention the cost of real maple syrup. So I took a substitute I found at a little drug store, epsom salt (they called it english salt). I would think the taste of sea salt would be a little better, but probably not by much. I tried slamming it, sipping it, using a straw and nothing helped me. It was terrible to choke it all down. Once it is in you, be prepared. It should kick in in about a half hour. So choose when and where you do the SWF wisely. You will be taking several trips to the porcelain throne. When you start to feel it, don't immediately rush to the toilet. Let it build a little to get a good flush.
Salt-water-flush-21-300x198_medium

That is the daily process. Some go as long as forty days, but 10 is the minimum. The ease-out is important to get your body ready to process food again. It is the ease-in process in reverse. Orange juice, juicing soups and broths, and living food diet.

This cleanse was amazing for me. Not many people can fast or cleanse because I believe the habit of eating food is too scary to let go of. I need to eat to live right??? The truth is, it is all mental. The pure maple syrup took care of the carbs and calories I needed while the water, lemon juice and cayenne pepper gave the vitamins and cleansing ingredients. After struggling with my habits, I willed myself to fight the food cravings and I felt amazing. I never once cheated, nibbled or tasted anything but the mixture. The toxins started coming out on day 4, some evidence could be seen by my tongue turning white. At the end I felt an amazing sense of accomplishment. My stomach problems disappeared, and I was told I had the colon of an 18 year old again. I could see the cleansing working in the mornings. I woke up in a good mood and ready to go. These were the benefits I experienced.

The biggest drawback was the lack of protein. I did lose weight, and a lot came from muscle. My body did not enter starvation mode and I stayed well hydrated, but muscle was lost along with some fat. I had enough energy to exercise, but it is not possible to gain muscle. Also, the mixture should not be prepared in advanced (loss of vitamins, cayenne will steep the mixture if it sits too long, etc...) so preparing it several times a day is a bit tedious.

To speak up and say a cleanse is not a proper diet or is not healthy is not educating yourself on the subject, like most doctors or reviewers can tend to do. Is it a proper diet? Of course not. That is why you don't do it forever. It is perfectly safe for a limited amount of time, and is almost necessary with today's fast foods and eating habits. I would not push for everyone to do a cleanse like I did for the cayenne pepper. It is a personal choice and commitment. It is not for everyone. But if you think you can do it and want to benefit from it to repair your body, you will not regret it when you reach the end. With a shot of warm water and cayenne pepper, I raise my glass, here's to your health, Maniacs.

If you read this far, here's some results of hot chicks who did the Master Cleanse (who loves ya baby?):

Good stuff. I am trying to drastically reduce bad carbs from my diet in order to lean out and not be as bulky. Should I attempt to work this in somehow in the middle or do it at the tail end of my diet?

Thanks. if the goal is just a bit of weight loss, I would say keep eating clean with dieting and exercise.

If it’s to cleanse, then I would do it now, this could fast forward your weight loss. Then if you aren’t as lean as you would like, resume your diet until you reach your goal.

how did you guess?

you can try and substitute another fruit juice that you can handle, the key is no preservatives.

Can you quantify your weight loss?

Also describe the type of workouts you did?
What have you done differently, since resuming solid foods, that will prevent a “relapse” of your prior symptoms? Has it worked so far?

well my goal was not weight loss, so I did not keep track of pounds or inches very closely

I lost about 10 pounds I would estimate, and maybe half an inch on the waist. I need some cardio and bag work along with light sparring and some rolling, but no weight training as there was no point without protein.
When you refrain from eating for a period of time to cleanse, you are then very careful what you put in your body not to pollute it again too badly. I eat a balanced diet, and avoid things like yeast. It has worked well.

i have fasted..

i have never done the salt flush..don’t think you really HAVE to do it…but it is a good thing..you can also just choke down psyllium husk(mixed with the liquid you drink) in the morning and evening as it acts as a fibre and scratches out the crud too… i went 10 days once on a sambu elderberry cleanse..10 days was too long for me at the time..i had ribs out the back at the end of it..
now i fast for 3- 6 days once or twice a year.. and it is a great thing to do..though chewing food is a fabulous thing and you miss that..plus your sense of smell becomes so clear and all foods are extra tantalizing…but breaking the fast is important to go mellow on food..because your body is not used to it yet and your metabolism is slowed way down..so that too is very hard..cuz once you start eating..you just want to eat like you used to..but that will work you over!

Would you recommend this “cleansing” for an mixed martial artist who competes?
How did it affect you mma training?

And if so, how far away from a fight would you suggest doing this??

Also about wat percentage ( if u can’t get a % just avg mass is fine) of muscle did you lose during the cleansisng and how long did it talke you to regain it?

Show no mercy; for you shall receive none

by Chorongota on Feb 2, 2012 5:10 PM EST up reply actions

yes I would recommend it

It affected my strength and conditioning training, but not technique training. I would suggest doing it far removed from a fight, as not to have the added pressure. Its like have a slight toe sprain, you can still train, just not do everything and you are back to normal in about 2 weeks. I lost some muscle, and took me about the same amount of time to get it back, but I’m not a huge bodybuilder type.

relying on 2 tbs of maple syrup for 40 days?

More power to you, my friend.

almost necessary with today’s fast foods and eating habits

This I agree with. Fast food is killing us and obesity is an epidemic. It can be nearly cleared out in one generation though, you know how? PARENTING. Not letting little mcfatass whine his/her way into shit food everyday. One generation of non-idiots could drastically alter the state of American Health.

While I like the post and overall mentality, I am more apt to agree with 90% juice/vegtable diet and 10% lean, natural, non hormone injected meat—due to protein combination not found naturally in non-meat products.

While I have yet to do it, I have family who run a colonic office, and I believe in their effectiveness.

For me, In general, the key to a great diet and health is , eat less meats, cut out the fast food and eating out, eat drastically more plant based food, drink drastically more water, intake drastically more vitamin-c, east much smaller portions, eat often, exercise.

Does it ever…….it expands on it to the power of 100. Personally, it’s one of the funniest movies i’ve ever seen. It never played in the movie theatres…it went straight to DVD. Luke Wilson (Old School) plays the lead role. I find that most people think it’s really fuckin stupid, or they think it’s one of the funniest movies they’ve ever seen. I would be of the latter. Your post is good except for the 'less meats' point

it should read, ‘less processed and non organic / grain fed meats.’

organic, grass fed red meat is very good for you. People misunderstand nutrition so much these days because our respective govt’s peddle horseshit info on food.

Stay away from grains, processed food, preservatives and simple carbs. Don’t fear any fats other than trans fats. High fats / low carbs is way better for the body than vice versa. Insulin, blood sugar and obesity are all related to our pandemic over consumption of carbs. More healthy fats should be used to replace them.

It pisses me off that nearly all shops, cafes, bistros etc are packed with high carb foods. The human body doesn’t need that shit..

I’m female. Last relationship was with a chick, currently I’m with a dude, we’ve been together for two years. Boyfriend doesn’t sound serious enough and fiance sounds wanky so I tend to use partner a lot.

MMA is like a puzzle, it's just a matter of finding a solution to each situation.

Oh, I meant to say that saying partner a lot is probably also leftover from the last relationship too.

People, please do not attempt these "cleanses"

The idea that we are full of toxins and waste is a myth, and most of the supposed health benefits of these cleanses are completely subjective and the result of the placebo effect. For people with certain health conditions these cleanses could be extremely dangerous.

Personal story you would like to share?

"To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man." - William Shakespeare (Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 3)

It's common sense

that a diet of water, syrup and cayenne pepper is not a sustainable, healthy diet. The solution to health problems caused by poor diet is long-term lifestyle changes, but those require far more perseverance and hard work than a 10-day “detox” which is essentially a starvation diet designed to shed water weight.

you clearly did not read the entire post,

as I addressed people with your point of view who is not familiar with the subject. But thanks for your comment.

I read the entire post

You acknowledge that it’s not a proper diet, and that it’s not for everyone, and that’s good, but it bears repeating. You still maintain that there are benefits to cleansing, and that it ‘repairs your body’. Those claims are entirely unproven.

So at best we can say that cleanses, if done for a short period of time, probably won’t kill you, but also don’t provide any real, observable benefit.

This article provides a decent breakdown of the detox myth:

If you’re skeptical and don’t want to take my word or the word of an article on the internet (and good for you if this is the case!) at least consult an actual nutritionist and/or doctor before you attempt any type of starvation diet.

I'm absolutely serious

What evidence is there that these cleanses are effective for treating actual medical issues?

You talk about wanting to eliminate ‘waste’ and ‘toxins’, but these are only pseudoscientific buzzwords.

by MS_Dos_Santos on Feb 4, 2012 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

So waste is just feces?

I seem to discard that pretty effectively already, without starving myself and drinking cayenne pepper…

Water intake is very important, and if the cleanse helps you to remember to drink plenty of water then I’m willing to recognize that as a limited benefit of it. However, it would probably be much healthier to just eat a normal diet, exercise, and drink plenty of water, instead of all this BS with pepper and syrup and lemons.

i dunno..

it has cured peoples ulcers..there are def. benefits..and if you can still crap after not eating for 4 days..there is most def. build up in your system..and eliminating that is healthy.

by sarah- on Feb 4, 2012 6:06 PM EST up reply actions

Food takes time to work its way through your body

Though 4 days would suggest a slow metabolism. There is nothing, however, to suggest that digested food working its way through your body is unhealthy. The idea that we have pounds of feces lining our colon wall that is unable to be shed naturally is completely false. The only time that your colon needs to be completely empty is if you’re having a colonoscopy or other rectal procedure.

I’ve never seen any documented case of a cleanse curing an ulcer. I’ve heard anecdotal stories about the symptoms of ulcers declining, but (to the best of my knowledge) these claims haven’t been reviewed by doctors, and in any event an anecdote is not proof of efficacy.

by theCloser on Feb 5, 2012 5:08 AM EST up reply actions

That's good, because there isn't any just sitting there

It’s working its way through your body. If feces was just ‘sitting there’ you would have an impacted bowel, and you would know it.
