Brandon Vera vs Thiago Silva rematch set for UFC on FX 3 on May 15 in Virginia
This is the rematch!
It's been a while but if you will, remember back to Jan. 1, 2011, when Thiago Silva rang in the New Year by playing bongos on Brandon Vera's back at the UFC 125: "Resolution" event in Las Vegas.
Silva laid a Donkey Kong style beating on Vera that resulted in a gnarly broken nose for "The Truth" and a pink slip from the powers that be.
Unfortunately, we later learned that Silva had tested positive for performance enhancing drugs and the result of the bout was overturned to a no contest while he was suspended for an entire year by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Oh, and Vera got his job back.
And now he can (try to) get his revenge at UFC on FX 3 on May 15 in Fairfax, Virginia, as announced by the promotion.
Vera has only fought once since getting his face rearranged by Silva's fists, a unanimous decision victory over Eliot Marshall back at UFC 137 in Oct. 2011. It certainly wasn't an inspiring performance but it gives him his shot at redemption.
Silva, meanwhile, has been remorseful, apologizing for his actions and quietly serving his suspension. But he's back now and the UFC has been so gracious as to give him the chance to defeat Vera without chemical aid.
How's this one going to play out, Maniacs?
UFC on FX 3 takes place on May 15 in Fairfax, Virginia. Silva vs. Vera is the only bout booked for the card at this time but stay tuned to MMAmania.com for future updates.

It says a lot when Thiago Silva is forced to grapple Vera cause he can't beat him on the feet

I just don’t want to see it there are better match ups but oh well I hope thiago finishes him so i won’t sound stupid

Dude..... I said the same thing during the first fight and everyone was like "VERA SUCKS"
When actually when they were standing up and squaring off…Vera had some sick exchanges. Vera is much better in striking then Thiago….but Thiago is obviously well beyond Vera in grappling.
vera needs to go to strikeforce.

Worst part is he has to cheat just to have an advantage over Brandon
Let’s see how he fares without the steroids
Professional sig bet record: 7-7-1
he will gass out
He wont be able to grapple with the same force and the same pace he did last time.

I hope Brandon Vera learned his lesson
And actually comes in to fight and not be the hesitant-let’s see what will happen-oh my ground-game is comparable to James Toney- attitude that he displayed in their first fight.
Professional sig bet record: 7-7-1
i was really suprised
How easy Thiago dominated him on the ground. Vera has a good background in greco romand and BJJ training with Lloyd Irvin. I also hope he lifted some weights
by robinhorobson on Feb 2, 2012 3:15 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Let's hope so
I mean the cut to 205, it seemed , has not been good for him. But he can’t compete at Heavyweight nowadays
Professional sig bet record: 7-7-1
At 205 i found him less explosive and he looks a lot weaker. I think he lacks pure strength for 205 at his current weight. I think he couldn’t handle the cut the first few times so he went down in weight giving up some of his strength to make the cut easier. He should go up in weight and learn how to cut more effective
by robinhorobson on Feb 2, 2012 3:21 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
I see why you think that but honestly though...
who did he ever really beat at HW that’s worth mentioning besides a far out of shape and coming off serious injury Mir? Vera’s good but he was never great. I personally never bought into his hype. Maybe lots of people did with all of his “I want to be the HW and LHW champ at the same time” bullshit.
Legit P4P Rankings.
#1: Silva (destroys top guys making them look bad for years)
#2: Jones (destroys everybody in front of him making it look easy)
#3: Aldo (tears up people whenever he's not too cautious)
#4: Edgar (should be fighting at 145 but beats everyone at 155)
#5: GSP (long time champ who can't stop guys that others can in the 1st rd or who aren't blown up LWs which isn't so dominating... hence P4P)

What are you on about..
There are plenty of other drugs out there that aren’t PED’s that are illegal and come up as banned substances.
Let’s start with
Pain Killers
"..That man has to be eliminated." - Fedor Emelianenko
No matter if its PED or not
The intention is to cheat. And why would he cheat against Brandon Vera? I can understand if its a higher-level opponent like Rashad, Machida or Bones. But Brandon Vera? You don’t need to cheat man
Professional sig bet record: 7-7-1
yep.. phasebook has it!
the guy fucking cheated.. my guess would be steroids..
why shouldn’t i think the extreme?

Thiago Silva has had a history of back problems
He had a back injury during the rashad fight but with all the injuries that plagued 108 he was coaxed to not pull out of the fighter. After the Vera fight when he was caught, he said his back had acted up but he wanted to fight and needed to in order to finically support himself. He says it was painkillers. If true, he didn’t do it to receive an edge. He did it so he could withstand competing
by mutedvoicebox on Feb 2, 2012 3:24 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
lol
He cheated. He took painkillers to hide his flaw and that was his back pain. Just like people who aren’t strong enough take steroids.
by robinhorobson on Feb 2, 2012 3:27 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Well, that's not always the case...
Many take steroids to GO LONGER…Your cells don’t tire as quickly as the next man.
formerly ZuffaAttacks
well same thing
I was just using a example. But taking painkillers against pain and taking steroids to improve cardio and strength. Is the same form of cheating. You are using a forbidden method to hide or improve flaws and weaknesses
by robinhorobson on Feb 2, 2012 3:33 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
In a dangerous sports where lives are at stake
Cheating is a no-no. Watch Assault in the Ring, a documentation by HBO and you could see the repercussions of cheating in combat sports.

Yeah, but there are a myriad of examples of how cheating doesn't often work in ones favor..

haha!

i think it worked for sonnon to an extent..
he would have never made it out of the 3rd round with silva had he not did TRT.. he had retard strength that fight.. made him look good.

by stinky~fingers on Feb 2, 2012 3:58 AM EST up reply actions
i dont think the comparisons completely hold up there..
Louis Resto had fucking Plaster of Paris on his wraps AND had the padding of his gloves removed to receive an edge on the actual point of impact with his punches. If Thiago had injections into his back to allow him to withstand pain to compete, he’s no different than about 1/3 of the NFL on a weekly basis! The only difference being that in a sport where he can concievably compete only once or twice a year, those pay days are even more important! I’m not condoning what he did, just saying there’s a diff..

I doubt Silva submitted animal urine to cover painkillers. I mean; he could have gotten the doctors okay and even checked with the commision. Chances are; thats a story to cover PED usage. Not being a hater; I just see that as a more probable reason to use animal urine.

I was also thinking of the same thing Ricky
But the problem is how big the HW Division has become with fighters like JDS, Cain, Overeem, Carwin, Nelson, etc. Those were huge guys and Brandon cannot hang with them . He will probably beat guys like Morecraft, Titties Beltran, among others. I think he will also be competitive with Struve, Barry and Noguiera there.

at least he'd be at his normal strength... get a couple decent wins.. and he's always have that unexpected factor on account of his speed..

Straight from Wiki for those without knowledge
On March 30 Silva released a statement admitting using a urine adulterant.
"I used a urine adulterant when giving a sample following my fight with Brandon Vera. I did so in an attempt to alter the results of the test and knowingly broke the rules of the Nevada (State) Athletic Commission. This was a terrible decision on my part for which I will be punished. I am prepared to accept this punishment, learn from it and move on. I apologize to the commission, the UFC, Brandon Vera and the MMA fans. "
Silva said he doesn’t want to make an excuse for his behavior, but he did hope to offer an explanation for his decisions.
“Please do not interpret this as an attempt to justify my actions. I know they were wrong, and I know I made bad decisions… I reinjured my back 45 days before the fight with Brandon Vera. After not fighting for a year, I made the decision to not pull out of the fight. I also decided that the only way I could continue with the fight was to take injections in my back and spine that contained substances prohibited by the Nevada (State) Athletic Commission. I also made the decision to use a product to hide the presence of these substances in a urine test.”8’

He’s insinuating that Sonnen is no longer on TRT and that’s why he had a poor fight against Bisping. Carwin was once loosely connected to a man (or pharmacy) in Alabama known to supply steroids. That’s my best guess anyway.
It doesn't matter what your name is!! The Rock will take your roody-poo candy ass to the corner of Know your role Boulevard and Jabroni Drive and check you in to the smackdown hotel!! If you smell what The Rock is cookin'!!
I think being investigated by the FEDS
Is as good as “being popped” for steroids. Carwin looked like a cancer patient coming down to the ring to face JDS. i guess a year without the juice does that to someone totally dependent on it.
As far as Sonnen, yeah. That’s a terrible example. He looked like shit against Bisping because Bisping’s better on his feet than Sonnen and he’s got good TDD.

I think your full of shit
Its well documented that Carwin cut down his muscle mass due to the lactic acidosis (sp) that hit him during the cockchest monster fight. Folowing your logic then I guess Mir is roided up because he put on so much muscle mass after his losses to Brock and Carwin?
After a botched kick atempt in the AFC championship game vs the Patriots, Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff attempted to commit suicide. Unfortunately, he could'nt kick the chair out from under himself...

Thiago Silva takes this
This time he’s getting the TKO. Brandon Vera lacks something as a UFC fighter. He’s never lived up to what he could have been. That being said, I thought he beat Couture.

Vera
Vera’s opportunity to “live up to what he could have been” has long since passed him by.
Keith Jardine had 1 win in 7 fights at one point in his career… that was against Vera. After Vera got in shape, claimed to re-invent himself, started jumping rope again…
Vera’s got sick stand up, sick Muay Thai. He should hold a win over Randy Couture… but shit happens. Vera’s got little chance at holding a top 10 LHW position at this point in his career, and in the UFC in general.

Thiago will ruin Vera
Vera is foolish for asking for this fight.
In post-fight releases, Vera said that Thiago was only able to hold him down because steroids gave him the strength to do so… really? Give me a break.
Yes, Vera lit Thiago up on the feet in the first match and Thiago took it to the ground. Thiago was injured, much like he was in his fight with Rashad. Thiago made a stupid mistake, he owned up to it (although, not initially) and he’ll be back in the top 10 at LHW in no time. Vera’s looking to make his return run 50-50 by calling Thiago out.

Based on what?
He’s Been a shell of his former self since he moved to LHW. I used to be a big Vera fan, but I’ve seen zero improvement since he went downhill.
