UFC on FOX 3 news: Pat Barry vs Lavar Johnson fight booked for May 5, Diaz vs Miller now five round main event

Pictured: Pat Barry

The UFC on Fox 3 fight card, which is booked to go down this coming May 5, 2012, in East Rutherford, New Jersey, is quickly shaping up. And there's a trend making itself quite clear.

The promotion today announced that the previously scheduled bout pitting lightweight bangers Nate Diaz vs. Jim Miller will now serve as the five-round main event of the evening. While the fight has yet to be officially declared a title eliminator, it would seem to make the most sense.

Additionally, a heavyweight scrap was booked pitting the heavy-handed kickboxer, Pat Barry, against Strikeforce import Lavar Johnson. Both men are coming off crushing knockout victories, Barry at UFC on FX 1 this past Jan. 20 and Johnson at the UFC on Fox 2 event on Jan. 28.

So we've now got two bouts confirmed for the main card that featuring competitors who generally go out of their way to put on a show for the fans.

The three FOX fight cards will have run the gamut of match-ups. The first event featured a heavyweight championship fight, the second saw safer match-making that led to three relatively boring decisions and now they're delivering fights that promise to be barnburners.

Calculated or just a coincidence?

Here's how the UFC on FOX 3 fight card looks right now:

Star-divide

Main event:

155 lbs.: Nate Diaz vs. Jim Miller

Main card:

265 lbs.: Pat Barry vs. Lavar Johnson

Preliminary card:

155 lbs.: Anthony Ferguson vs. Dennis Hallman
125 lbs.: John Dodson vs. Darren Uyenoyama

Maniacs, how do you feel about the way this event is shaping up? And what should the third and final FOX fight be?

Let's get your fantasy bookings in the comments section below.

Let Del Rosario fight Carwin...

So this “Carwin is one of the best HW strikers” myth be crushed!

by Starr788 on Feb 2, 2012 2:40 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think so.

Carwin nearly got KO’d by Gonzaga.

Shane earned himself a lot of KO’s.. mostly over guys thatcan’t strike worth a crap. Way overhyped imo.

mir is crap. barry would have a good shot at beating him.

why are ppl talking about carwin? is he ever going to fight again, if he does he won’t be the same he’s getting older and injuries on an old man is career ending.

Not saying Barry would beat him…I just don’t think there is as big a gap with some of these HWs as people think…and styles make fights…but yeah I’d be betting on Frank to win but not at all be surprised if Barry finished him on the feet

And why is Frank such a big deal (even though I like him)? Is it because he beat Kongo or because he beat a 1-0 Lesnar?

They are already mid-tier. A win for either one of them takes them nowhere "rankings wise." I agree with Starr. Exciting match up, though!

I don't mind stealing bread from the mouths of decadence...

by DetroitDrew1980 on Feb 2, 2012 2:11 AM EST up reply actions

That's the problem

These match ups only feed into that generalization…I don’t want to see big guys who can just swing…I want to see good technical match ups, regardless of if it’s two HWs or not…that’s why Pride HWs were so great when that organization was at it’s peak…these days there are only a few HWs with good technique…and they’re hardly ever matched…

A good fight would have been Barry vs Del Rosario….tell me that’s not sexy….

by Starr788 on Feb 2, 2012 2:21 AM EST up reply actions

Dammit Starr......I thought you were a pretty cool toughy mctougherson

then you had to go and say Pride HWs were in any form or fashion better than the UFC’s……Shane Carwin would have won the HW GP no problem. I would say Lavar Johnson and Pat Barry could have come close, probably falling short to Josh Barnett and Nog(maybe).

Don't make me swing on you bro

by PrivateBox on Feb 2, 2012 7:43 AM EST up reply actions

He flattens Nog, CC, and Fedor in the first round.

Barnett would be a little tricky, but I think Carwin matches up well against him. I don’t see any of them being able to take Carwin down. He was able to stop all of Lesnar’s shots until he gassed, and I believe Lesnar has a much more powerful shot than these guys. Nog is the only one who may match up well with Carwin on the feet. He has some alright movement and good crisp boxing. CC gets flattened as soon as Carwin cuts off the ring and finds his chin once. Greg Jackson would have Carwin nice and prepared for Fedor’s overhand right. Easy fights for Carwin.

If you think an in prime, top of the ranks striker in CC loses to a one dimensional puncher in Carwin then you don’t what you’re talking about. Fedor runs rings around Carwin, eventually knocks a gassed Carwin the F out. Nog and Barnett tool Carwin.

by tkotom on Feb 2, 2012 8:27 AM EST up reply actions

That's a rational and fair way to go about things.

No one has a good fucking excuse for Fedor. The dude isn’t that good. His career is a farse. He isn’t out of his prime, he isn’t all beat up from wars…..he just isn’t a top ten fighter. Nog barely makes top ten and Cro Cop(poor guy) either A. Lost his killer instinct…..yea right. or B. Started fighting people who could move around and not get blasted by a head kick……Cro Cop puzzle solved there.

Don't make me swing on you bro

"..That man has to be eliminated." - Fedor Emelianenko

by tkotom on Feb 2, 2012 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

He flattens Nog, CC, and Fedor in the first round.

A heavy handed Carwin would have to hope that all 3 of these HW’s in their prime would just stand in front of him in order for this to happen.

Based on the fights that I have seen it is possible but highly unlikely.

Carwin does not have the quick draw fists or lateral movement to catch CC or Nog. Fedor would have the style to match up and make your prediction more of a possibility. Barnett would sub Carwin after body locking him and tripping him.

You have faith in Carwin that might be a tad unrealistic, IMO.

"To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man." - William Shakespeare (Hamlet, Act 1, Scene 3)

by OJR on Feb 2, 2012 9:05 AM EST up reply actions

I know MMA math is terrible......

BUT……Frank Mir= 2 brutal stoppages over Nog, 1 boring yet brutal stoppage over Cro Cop.

Shane Carwin= A one sided pounding of Frank Mir

But that is elementary logic to picking fights. Carwin has the wrestling to take Cro Cop down if he had to, especially in a cage. I still see him finding CC’s chin. Nog would not be able to get Carwin down to save his life, so that one would be a pretty good stand up battle.

Don't make me swing on you bro

You guys also need to remember that Gonzaga almost put Carwin on his ass. You guys also need to remember that Carwin can only go 1 round without his body going numb, due to complete lack of cardio. Aldo note that Carwins ‘best’ win is Mir.

He has done NOTHING for anyone to think he would take the very best heavyweights in their prime.

i'm not saying he'll find success,

but dropping a weight class is the opposite of what zeso said.

Oh but I’m not talking about dropping a weight class I’m saying no matter what weight or opponent he won’t change his style. Beltran at 205 won’t be any different than him at heavyweight. His body may change but no matter what he does he will always slug it out

by zesotheclown on Feb 2, 2012 2:38 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Keep in mind, dropping a weight class is one thing, but he's really droppin 3-4 classes considering it's 205.

His style will have to change, i’m not saying he wont slug, but he’s dieting, dropping a lot of fat, not muscle mass. He’ll be faster and anyone can evolve.

by DetroitDrew1980 on Feb 2, 2012 2:41 AM EST up reply actions

True I agree people can evolve their game but i just don’t see HIM being a guy that does but who knows maybe slugging it out with the lhw division of whatever promotion he goes to won’t be a bad thing

by zesotheclown on Feb 2, 2012 2:43 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

get him in Bellator.

by DetroitDrew1980 on Feb 2, 2012 2:46 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe bellator but i think he shouldnt jump into anywhere too quick he should drop in weight and train at that weight for awhile and then look to get a fight. Atleast that’s what i would do

by zesotheclown on Feb 2, 2012 2:49 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Lavar won.

Lavar had an exciting fight.

Lavar likes to WWWAAAR.

Lavar will stay in the UFC as long as he doesn’t face ground fighters.

The UFC's HW division was always inferior to that of SF's.

I think they are just looking for an exciting injection of strikers in the HW division.

Not sure the UFC HW div. was inferior but I would say SF was on par. That is why the UFC bought them. Some good fights coming up. I almost want to just see the rest of the SF HWs come over to the UFC now. Cormier’s hand is taking forever.

reem, barnett, cormier (who was in bellator until early 2011),big foot(barely beat andrei, lost to werdum, crushed fedor, and lost to comeir, werdum (crushed by a rookie first fight jds)barely got past big foot, pulled a sub out of his ass against a fading fedor, and whiped his ass with the cage floot agasint reem) …

dont get me wrong i like overeem .. but it remains to be seen if he can beat a top guy .i.e. ufc’s heavy weight division has been the best since 09 …

Well...he was coming off 2 losses

1 to a guy who could easily become a top UFC HW in Del Rosario and 2 to a guy who I know nothing about in Shawn Jordan…

But he smashed the ish out of Beltran, something that even praised UFC HW Matt Mitrione…so I guess he belongs

by Starr788 on Feb 2, 2012 2:14 AM EST up reply actions

Beltran was a perfect stylistic match up for lavar

much smaller, too hittable, and didn’t have the tools to get the fight to the ground.

Yes he subbed him. Keep in mind Lavar threw bombs on Jordan and he still pulled it out. Jordan will be a decent force in the ufc I just don’t see Lavar being all that great but who knows. But most if Lavar losses are by sub

by zesotheclown on Feb 2, 2012 2:47 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Hell Yeahh!

This is what the UFC needs to show to the masses. Pat Barry is an exciting fighter and a fan favorite. Guarantee Dana is gonna try to get him to go for a headkick KO for a huge bonus.

Jim is gonna be Nates toughest test in a while

tougher than Cowboy…

This, or Nick ’s fight this weekend could certainly be fight of the year!!

formerly ZuffaAttacks

by somnium on Feb 2, 2012 2:20 AM EST reply actions

Bad matchup for nate imo.. kind of feel this one has chance to be a let down if jim implements the right game plan.

Jim has the tool to to gray maynard him, or stun gun kim him. Barboza vs Diaz would have been an instant classic…. But im not complaining about this matchup cause its a beauty!

by letstalkmma on Feb 2, 2012 2:31 AM EST reply actions

you mean a let down as in Nate may lose

or as in a boring fight, cause I think this has the potential to be a hell of a fight

by Tommy Shenanigans on Feb 2, 2012 2:37 AM EST up reply actions

Gray Maynard did nothing but win on points...and that was a 3 round fight

You can’t compare Stun Gun to Miller…two different styles of offense and one is a lot bigger than the other

by Starr788 on Feb 2, 2012 2:51 AM EST up reply actions

He can do it all...

But Kim vs Diaz is a completely different fight than Miller vs Diaz…for one Diaz was moving up in weight and fighting a guy who is naturally a stronger grappler than him…with Miller, the advantages aren’t as evident, you know this

by Starr788 on Feb 2, 2012 2:59 AM EST up reply actions

Get outta here...

You tried to make it seem like Gray was so imposing when he fought Diaz and he did something so clear and tactful to win the fight when in reality that fight could have gone either way….if not then, what is the tool to “Gray Maynard” him?

by Starr788 on Feb 2, 2012 2:57 AM EST up reply actions

u responded to my comment... And don't go putting words in my mouth... I never once said Gray was so imposing..

I know that the gray fight was razor thin… My points i see Jim winning with the same tactic that gray used to get a win…. I dont find that to hard to understand.

by letstalkmma on Feb 2, 2012 3:01 AM EST up reply actions

I'm sorry...I just don't think squeaking out a decision reveals any tactic worth drawing from

Maybe if Maynard had convincingly beaten Diaz, then yeah we could say Miller should adopt that same strategy…Hendo baaaaaarely beat Shogun, and that fight was super exciting…yet still, no LHW with sense will say to themselves “let me fight Shogun the way Hendo did”

And I’m not putting words in your mouth…I can’t think of any other meaning for “Gray Maynard him”…my apologies if it only means squeak out a decision

by Starr788 on Feb 2, 2012 3:11 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

it also means impose your will on him,, keep the fight within close distance. Takedowns here and there...

Maynard was also gassed toward the end of that Diaz fight, which i dont see happening to jim. When was the last time Nate lost a decision that couldnt be argued as close? I cant think of one..

by letstalkmma on Feb 2, 2012 3:15 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think Gray took him down once.

Also, Nate definitively lost to Guida.

Easy fight for Barry....

1st round KO. I like Larar and won money on him against the Mexicutioner (easy $$$$) but Barry has real stand-up and Larar is Taylor made for him. The Mexicutioner was a gift but he won’t get sloppy stand-up like that from Barry.

by Taiter on Feb 2, 2012 8:11 AM EST reply actions

I have Barry in this. He has power

he has better technical ability and he’s much faster than Lavar or Beltran. It’s a good fight for Barry to keep building his confidence.
