UFC 145: Rashad Evans calls Jon Jones a fake and a fraud, 'Bones' tries to keep it classy (Video)

Is it April yet?

UFC 145 is more than two months away, but former training partners and bitter rivals who are set to headline the pay-per-view (PPV) event, Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans, at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Ga., on April 21, 2012, continue to verbally spar prior to the championship clash.

It apparently gets even more dicey when the pair have to share a stage.

This is one must-see exchange that "Suga" attempts to instigate throughout, while "Bones" attempts to remain cool and collected.

Call me crazy, but Evans' incessant poking, as well as admittedly having no respect for Jones as a person, has to be having some sort of impact, whether the Light Heavyweight champion wants to admit it or not. Or, perhaps, he just doesn't realize yet.

That will likely change, for better or worse, as fight night draws closer.

Check out part two of the heated exchange on the set of "SportsNite" after the jump:

Why did people hate Tito Ortiz back in his early days??

Some people just didn’t like the attitude, same shit man. Some people don’t like JBJ, I know this is impossible for JBJ fans to understand but when most people watch MMA they like to choose someone to root for and they also like to root against others. That’s all based on personal bias and JBJ comes off as a douche to a lot of people in a lot of interviews. There’s no conspiracy going on against JBJ, the guy just isn’t that likeable outside the cage from a fans perspective.

What about him isn't likeable? How specifically is he a douche?

I think this is what FaQ is getting at. Bones is a straight forward guy. People say that but they don’t say specifically what it is that led them to this conclusion. Take this situation for example. In this interview I think it is clear who the douche is, Rashad. Yet here I am defending Jones. I think he is what 99% would want in a real friend if you were to hang out with JBJ in real life. If we are talking about personality. I think many Mania fans just like to root for fighters that will fight the door-greeter at Walmart if they feel like they looked at them wrong. Guys like Diego from TUF or the Diaz brothers. Punks as I like to call them. People who you would hate in real life. If these guys weren’t fighting they would be thugs and criminals. To me I can’t stand people like that whether they are good fighters or not. And I don’t get it when a class act like Jones gets blasted. It’s kind of like the Tebow effect. Fans can’t seem to stand genuinely nice people. There is this jaded expectation that they must somehow be fake. As if Nick Diaz or his ilk are somehow more “real”. Because he is a “fighter.” Give me a break. I’ve seen the posts on Mania where people cry foul but if you watch the entire video of the interview he does not seem like a douche at all. It is easy to post one sentence of an interview on a blog and make it seem like a guy is talking crap, etc.

Do not. I repeat, do not, go to mma-core.com. I made the mistake of watching a couple UFC 108 bouts on there and I am still trying to get all the viruses off my computer. Ridiculous! You've been warned.

I've posted plenty of times, plenty of specific examples as to why I don't root for the guy

JBJ fans don’t get why ppl dislike him, the ppl that dislike him don’t understand how JBJ fans can’t see what they do. No point in going over specifics because you’ll interpret it differently or say it’s a non issue and that it’s blind hatred and blah blah blah. I have never seen a fighter who’s fans are so adament on other people “liking” him. It’s usually a debate on whether or not this guy is really, truley, a great fighter. But for some reason the JBJ fans want everybody to “like” the guy as well.

Fair enough ODamn.

I honestly don’t care that you don’t like him. I don’t expect you to care that I don’t like Nick Diaz. I was just trying to understand. It’s like Dennis Prager says: “I value understanding above agreement.” I figured maybe it was because of all the hype before he had proven himself and now even though he has proven himself that people are wanting to see him fall because they still have that bitter taste in their mouth. But the more interviews I watch where I come away saying thinking Jones is a nice kid and a stand-up guy and others say he is a douche because of the same interview, the more I am leaning towards his religion. I may be way off but it seems like the Tebow effect. He comes out and says he is a Christian and he makes a concerted effort to say the right things and be respectful and that burns people up. When push came to shove he helped to thwart a robbery. That shows character more than a few comments in an interview. Would Nick Diaz have helped a victim of a robbery on the streets of Stockton? Hey, I was one that doubted Bones. And I am not even really ready to call myself a fan. I just am trying to understand all this hate. I have been saying for a long time that most of the top LHW’s have the tools to beat Jones. The more I see him fight the more I wonder but I think Rashad can do it. I don’t know that he will but I think he can.

Do not. I repeat, do not, go to mma-core.com. I made the mistake of watching a couple UFC 108 bouts on there and I am still trying to get all the viruses off my computer. Ridiculous! You've been warned.

It's comments like the following that get people

"We fought each other in practice. A finish has been possible several times, and it has always been me finishing him," Jones boasted. "I never did it out of respect that he was the elder of the school. It’s against protocol in a way. Some people would do it, but I believe in tradition."

“"He has a lot to study. I have a lot to study, but I get to study[ing] more in-depth," Jones declared. "He gets to study[ing] and gets a headache.”

“I’m a breath of fresh air that ‘Shogun’ Rua just can’t handle” – there was more to that one but that’s all I can remember right now. Anyway, it was some seriously vain shit.

Or the story, according to Evans, about when JBJ and he are at a Vegas night club and JBJ calls him over to tell him “I’m going to destroy you.” In some kind of intimidation attempt.

A lot of people didn’t like the cocky, toss Rampage over the shoulders after the bell rings thing. I think some people didn’t see why he dropped Machida like a bag of rocks when he said at the post fight presser that he knew the guy was out before he let go.

I could go on, but if you’re a JBJ fan then none of that means anything to you and you don’t see a problem with any of it. Agree to disagree I guess.

Also what bothers me

is that he never looks his opponents in they eyes. It’s either a super-egotistical (you’re not good enough to look at me) thing, or a discomfort thing. I’d lean towards the latter because of all his other awkward/weird tendencies, and when someone feels as almighty as Jones does, it doesn’t make sense to not be comfortable staring down an opponent. That’s fake shit, to me.

Yea I don't know when he started doing that

But I really dislike the staredown thing. I remember A. Silva did that vs Chael, but it was obviously meant to be a disrespectful thing and that’s the only time he’s done that to my recollection. JBJ does it every fight, to every fighter. It just comes off as arrogant to me.

In the vid he asks Rashad his opinion why he is fake

Then proceeds to talk over the top of him about how he is so humble. Being humble includes being able to accept others being critical about you, even if u dont agree. He seems unable to take any criticism or accept that he might not be perfect. Dont know why he thinks that is so important as a fighter but there it is.

I got nothin clever to say/

by Wowzer1 on Feb 20, 2012 9:15 PM EST up reply actions

Bones is too sensitive, but I don't think he's a prick like Rashad

Jones is still growing into his own skin…still has some immaturity and insecurities to deal with. I don’t think he fully knows himself yet. But Rashad is a two-faced little bitch, every bit as insecure and immature (see his TUF spats with Page and his behaviour with Forrest in the cage.) but without the excuse of youth. If I thought he’d learn anything from it, I’d be rooting for Bones to knock his teeth in, but Machida already did that and Rashad is still the same a-hole he was before that fight.

"Who's da MASTA?!!!"

If this is all you have, then that is really nothing to complain about as far as Bones goes. Unless you want a fighter to completely act like he never has a chance or any confidence before his fights, than I don’t see the problem.

IMO a humble person doesn’t run around talking about how humble they are.

How do you think Jones gets it done against Shad? How does Shad find a way to win?

Does anyone think Shad can land a big right hand? Can he take Jones down….and keep him there? Has Jones ever had anyone GnP him before? I don’t remember him ever really being on his back. I would imagine Shad has the tools and the right inside info to get him down.

I think it's winnable for Rashad

He’s fast, good hand speed and he has the athletic ability to close that distance very quickly. If he picks his spots, gets in and gets out with his striking and sets up a few TD’s I can definatley see him winning this fight.

I think he should just look at the 1st rd of JBJ vs Machida, Lyoto wasn’t coming straight at him and he wasn’t running away from him, it was a more tactical, measured approach and JBJ had a little bit of trouble with that.

I think this will be Jones' toughest task.

It will be the greatest amount of skill/cardio/heart/hunger/health/diversity combined that he’ll face. I could see either fighter win by decision. I could see Jones winning by sub sometime after the first couple rounds. I could see Evans getting a TKO at any time. I really don’t see it ending any other way.

I only see Shad winning via TKO after some GNP. Jones doesn’t sit in the pocket for very long and I don’t see Shad landing anything that could end the fight on the feet. Who knows though. What is the over under on Shad getting cut in this thing? Doesn’t everyone?

true, but

to be honest, I don’t see Jones “bullying” Evans very much. I think he’ll try to keep it on the feet with space and use his diverse striking. Just my thinking. I think that’s his best chance, especially in the 1st few rounds.

So for me, I think Shad has a better chance of being on top, but not by much.

Can I pick your brain a little bit?

I don’t want to come off as close-minded and take issue with who you like, but can you explain why you like Jones? I mean, the only 2 reasons I can think of are if you know him personally (friend or relative) or if you just like greatness, regardless of character. Obviously, I can’t argue with the 1st reason, but the 2nd one comes off as kind of fairweather-fanish. I can appreciate greatness and enjoy watching it, while still being able to dislike and root against it. For example, let’s go over the current champs:

JDS: I like him. Seems like a very humble and good person.
Jon Jones: Can’t stand him. Seems like such a weird/awkard, arrogant, fake, douchebag.
A-Silva: Neutral. I don’t like or dislike him. He’s bothered me some, but nothing close to make me dislike him.
GSP: Really like him. See JDS
Condit: I like him. See JDS
Edgar: Somewhere between neutral and like. It’s obvious that his work ethic is sick. It also helps that he’s been facing a couple guys that I don’t care for at all (Penn & Maynard).
Aldo: Neutral. Nothing that’s swayed me in either direction.
Cruz: Don’t like him at all. Seems like such a douchey-ass dork.

I guess it’s just interesting that some people seem to pay no attention to character, or at least let skill vastly overshadow it. Just trying to understand where they’re coming from.

Jon Jones was the greatest raw talent that MMA had ever seen 3 years ago.

He molded that into becomiing the champion in the marquee division of the marquee organization of MMA. He systematically destroyed the guy who was previously considered the greatest current talent, and former wunderkind, of the divsion and proceeded to destroy two other former champions who he left tapping, or unconscious, on the canvas.

I don’t really care if he is a snitch. I don’t care if he is very awkward in interviews. I don’t see the arrogance that most of his haters claim they see. Jon Jones is an awkward kid who just happens to be the best fighter on the planet (cue the Anderson Silva debate….but remember who said who wouldn’t fight who, and why, before you do).

If you can’t appreciate the talent in the cage, then you might as well go watch WWE or Real fucking Housewives as the drama is what you are a fan of, not talented fighters, and Jones is truly talented. He is a once in a generation fighter. No one has had a run like he just had in 2011. If he beats Rashad, his run of beating the 4 most recent 205 champions gives him claim to greatest MMA’ist ever, and easily puts him into the fake #1 P4P spot. No one has done that. EVER.

I understand all of that.

So you fall under the 2nd reason I mentioned. I definitely appreciate his skills and realize what he has done so far is amazing. Although, I don’t think it’s quite as amazing as some seem to think. But we won’t get into that. I guess I just don’t care for the notion of liking someone and defending them just because they’re great. A Jon Jones fight will definitely grab my attention as something I’ll for sure be interested in watching. But at the same time, I hate the guy. I appreciate your response, but it really didn’t help to answer my question.

They just like him inside the cage or claim that that's all they pay attention to

Which I highly doubt cause EVERYBODY has at least one fighter that they can’t stand and want to root against and the reasons for that probably have absolutley nothing to do with anything that goes on in the cage.

Completely agree. I typically hate certain fighters because their fans are so delusional that it causes me to hate the fighter.

Used to be Couture. Thank God the paycheck retired.
Then BJ. The laziest, most talented fighter ever.
Now Nick Diaz. Not starting that again.

I watched all three of them fight as often as I could and appreciated what they do in the cage, but their fans opinions of them were the reason for the hate, lol.

Now with Bones, I will hug his nuts as much, and as often, as I can simply because his anti-fans are so adamant in their hate. It doesn’t mean Forrest will ever be replaced as my favorite fighter…;)

It will be one of the few fights where Rashad Evans comes into the cage and the crowd is cheering like crazy for him to win. Trust me, it won’t be because they all love Rashad Evans. That should tell you something, cause Rashad is also one of those fighters that people like to boo.

The he knocked him the fuck out and later, after the taste of bile left my throat, I realized that he is truly one of the greats.

Rashad plays a part just like Kos plays a part just like Sonnen plays a part. All smart, successful men, but Rashad is the most talented of the MMA heels, by a wide margin.

I'm kind of like you, ulf

I tend to let fan perception control who i like/dislike to a degree, just don’t think it’s as much as you seem to.

I used to like Couture, but the whole holdout/lying/greed thing made me dislike him. Fans didn’t affect me with him. I think he’s very good, but yeah, he’s kind of overrated. I try not to let super-biased fans who are ridiculous affect me. To the typical knowledgeable fan, I think Couture was rated correctly.

On the other hand, Penn was totally different. He seemed to be considered a god in mma and I had no idea why. He accomplished very little.

Diaz is definitely overrated, too. Doesn’t seem like anything more than a gatekeeper. Who’s he beat?

As for Bones, don’t forget that there are some fans, like myself, who hate him, but still appreciate his greatness. It can go both ways at the same time.

there was nothing fake or arrogant about him. He was friendly and easy going and took pictures with us and joked around. it takes time to truly know one’s character not just a few post fight interviews. By the way I also met griffin and he was an ass….so go figure …shogun was awesome though.

I don't really put much stock into those kinds of situations.

I mean, you could argue that Jones loves the attention and can come across as caring about the fans. As for Forrest, maybe he’s just more real and is understandably sick of the attention his popularity has brought him. Or maybe he was in a hurry, had a bad day, or he just happens to really be an ass. Who knows. I feel as though what I’ve seen from these 2 guys up to this point means more than a couple very short encounters.

People need to stop doing this ^^

There is no conspiracy against JBJ, some people just don’t like the guy. Actually the majority of fans it seems. Look at the way they cheered Machida and boo’d Bones at the weigh in. Look at Greg Jacksons infamous “Get some fans.” line. Some people just rub other people the wrong way. Bones is one of those fighters the fans don’t seem to get behind.

Doing what? Having an opinion? Asking questions? No conspiracy theory.

I have pressed you and UFChamp and gotten no answers. I explained my theory in my response to you above. Matt Hughes was a douche but no more than most other fighters. But you mix in that he says he is a Christian and it seems like the hate meter goes off the chart. I may be completely wrong. Just a theory. I don’t think it is a conspiracy. People hate guys like JBJ and Bendo and cheer guys like Diaz and Cerrone. Maybe it is just that in entertainment people like a villain. I am just coming up with conjecture here because no one will give me a straight answer. That’s why I asked about Bendo. I would still be interested to see what Champ says about him.

No, what you're trying to say without just coming straight out and saying it is

That a right thinking, logical person can in no way dislike JBJ. That it’s impossible to dislike the guy’s personality and that everyone that does is just a hater and they have no possible justification for not cheering for JBJ when he walks out to the cage.

That’s what it sounds like you (and many others) are trying to say, IMO.

1st off,

I hope to god I don’t have to explain his weird/awkwardness. That’s a given, right? And yes, to me, the way he talks, he comes off as having an arrogant demeanor. He sounds like he’s on his high horse 24-7 as well. This is where the “fakeness” comes in. Someone that arrogant who’s seemingly trying to come off as being high/mighty/all good screams, “fake.” I know I’m not alone on this.

As for Ben Henderson, I honestly don’t know enough about him yet to have a real opinion of him yet, so I’d say neutral. I didn’t watch WEC and I pay much more attention to the WW-and-up divisions than I do the smaller ones. Can you give another example from one of those divisions who has been in the UFC for awhile?

Same stuff everyone was saying before the Chuck fight. I was there telling everyone what Rashad was gonna do to him and I was called crazy and delirious. And there were all sorts if excuses for why Chuck lost after the fight that nobody would’ve ever said before the fight. Same thing will happen when Rashad beats Jones. Lets not act like Jones is invincible. He’s good, but very beatable. Machida beat him in the standup. What makes you think Jones has anything for Rashad’s wrestling? He certainly doesn’t have the accolades to compete with Rashad’s wrestling. I don’t know if Rashad will ko Jones, but it’s entirely possible. It’s entirely probable that Rashad will win either way.

When you’re trash-talking about religion… your trash-talk has officially jumped the shark.

by DX OX on Feb 20, 2012 2:49 AM EST up reply actions

You're right

That religion thing was uncalled for

Also that Rashad said i know who you are cause i have seen you in real life, and then not saying what he is meaning…

It is also weird that first Jon Jones is saying oh yeah i am the funniest, the most handsome etc. etc. Than say i’m not perfect. These guys are sooo annoying!!!

I hope this will be a double KO so we can say they both lost because they are already getting on my nerves..

by The Redbull on Feb 20, 2012 9:06 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think it's pumping up the fans.

It’s not that it’s uncalled for, but that it’s just stupid and does not entertain or pump the fans up. I don’t really care either way because I never fall for hype and trash-talk, but fans just get weirded out by all the religious shit.

Also, fighters usually say outrageous, untrue or self-contradictory things all the time when they trash-talk. It’s nothing new. But with these two, it isn’t entertaining like it was with Bisping and Sonnen. With Evans and Jones, it’s just weird and uncomfortable. I, however, would not object to a double KO.

Rashad is Right

Young people tend to have an overly exaggerated vie of their own significance in the world. If you do music, you believe you’re going to be the next Michael Jackson. If you’re in business, you believe you will found the next Google. If you’re in politics, you think being POTUS is your destiny. If you’re in sports, you think you’re the next Muhammad Ali.

That confidence is a great thing because believing in your potential is a great motivator. However, statistically speaking everybody cannot be great. Less than 1% of us will ever be Steve Jobs, Reagan or Ali. Eventually, like Rashad says, we all taste failure. Your teenage band fails to get a record contract and you quit to become an insurance salesman. Your start-up fails and you go get a real job. You suffer defeat in your athletic career, and retire as just another footnote in history. Older people are more conservative for a reason- they know life’s a bitch and most of us will die unknown, unsung and unsuccessful.

Of course, this doesn’t mean Jones cannot be the Ali of MMA. He just doesn;t realise that statistical reality is not in favor of that. Even Ali was eventually defeated. Churchill went into exile before returning to lead the world against Hitler. Maybe it is only after Jones’ first defeat that we (and he) will know if he really has the heart of a champion. That’s what Rashad meas by saying his attitude will change when he tastes failure for the first time.

I totally disagree with this post. Who gives a shit if statistically he isn't gonna be the Ali of mma.

Statistically Jobs shouldn’t have even had a well paying job but he believed he did. In no way am I saying that Jones is a good guy but for you to say that confidence is a good motivator but statically everybody cannot be great in naive to say the least. Why should anyone settle with statistics. The point of young people thinking that they have the whole world ahead of them is the point of being young. If no one believed that then no one would be great. Who cares about the 1%. Strive to be the best you can be and don’t let anyone tell you the statistics of your future.

not everyone is wired in the same way

I’m not discrediting Mot’s post because he put some thought into it, it was well written (they usually are), and provides a perspective that most of us are not thinking of. BUT, Jones is a Generation Y which puts a different spin on things. Gen Y’s exude confidence, a sense of entitlement and narcissism which describes JBJ to a tee. Nothing wrong with that at all.

It has nothing to do with exaggerating their impact on the world.

Good post

But it does imply that you are a failure if you’re not rich or famous, which is wrong. You can find personal success that doesn’t conform to the standards of success set by people on tv and movies, and you can live a much better life in every way than the most rich and/or famous person out there. Very fame-obsessed culture in America these days.

True

But then again, that’s how older people think. Some may say it’s a rationalization that comes when it finally dawns on you that you’ll never be rich, famous or successful in the conventional sense. So you shift your goalposts and say ‘Well, I can be successful in other ways.’

Not British, and I love the US!

I just think this new Reagan idolization is getting out of hand! There are so many great presidents in the history of the USA. Why idolize one of the worst?!

He tripled the federal budget deficit. During the Reagan years, the debt increased to nearly $3 trillion. Federal spending "ballooned" under Reagan. He bailed out Social Security in 1983 after attempting to privatize it, and set up a progressive taxation system to keep it funded into the future. Reagan illegally funneled weapons to Iran, and he helped OBL and the Taliban by arming them to fight the Soviets by proxy.

The list goes on and on…

Bitches! Do my dishes!

by roycecrazy on Feb 20, 2012 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

you must be too young to remember the Cold War

Reagan won it. He’s the reason you don’t have a bomb shelter under your back yard stocked with canned goods. He’s the reason there’s not a big Red totalitarian shadow looming over your kids’ futures. I find it sad that the world so quickly forgot the Soviet threat and how Americans want to blame Reagan for our financial woes when he was fighting the longest war in our history against the biggest adversary the Free World has ever known. Now that the Juggernaut has been put down, the whole world wants to bitch about America’s role in international affairs. I didn’t hear them (especially the Europeans) bitching that America should mind it’s own business when the USSR was still around, let alone the Third Reich.

Oh gawd, where to start...

I do remember the cold war, and I probably felt it more than you did considering I practically lived on the border to the USSR. Soviet collapsed on it’s own. Maybe Reagans arms race quickened the process by a couple of years, but saying he won the cold war is a joke.

I won’t even bother discussing the 2nd WW, but you’re probably aware of the fact that that story has quite a few dimensions, right?

Bitches! Do my dishes!

by roycecrazy on Feb 21, 2012 10:24 AM EST up reply actions

And btw...

Why don’t you praise Kennedy instead? His handling of the cuban missile crisis is the fact that I’m living in my house instead of a bunch of nuke-proof roaches. That was a much more impressive feat than anything Ronnie Ray-gun managed during his 8 years…

Bitches! Do my dishes!

by roycecrazy on Feb 21, 2012 10:34 AM EST up reply actions

Kennedy showed some real stones there, no doubt. But Reagan’s defense spending that he’s so criticized for is what bankrupted the Soviets. And if they’d let him build his Star Wars system, we wouldn’t have to worry so much about all these rogue states and insane dictators getting their hands on an ICBM.

Yet he can’t decide which persona he wants for himself as he changes his act continually trying to speak well at some times and when he wants to act “hard” switches into his deep ebonic mode. or he told some dirty jokes once

Openly religious people are judged by a completely different measuring stick. If a non-religious guy tells an off-color joke or loses his temper, he’s cool. But if someone who’s vocal about their religion does anything fallible, he gets labeled as a hypocrite. And if he manages to avoid any obvious vices, he gets labeled as self-righteous and judgmental no matter how humble his demeanor. Much of society seem to feel threatened by the very existence of religious people or any display of faith in public life. Same goes for pacifists, vegetarians, almost anyone who lives by a clearly defined code of conduct. No matter how humble or polite they are, people will accuse them of being judgemental and stuck up because those who live their life with no real absolutes feel threatened by anyone whose lifestyle & choices suggest that there are any objective truths out there that transcend our subjective opinions. They don’t have to TELL us we’re wrong, they just have to live in a way that suggests there is such a thing as “wrong” and we get offended and feel the need to retaliate against an attack that never happened.

Jon Jones has never said anything judgmental about anyone who doesn’t believe as he does, but guys like him and Vitor get bashed on this site constantly for being “self-righteous” just because they’re public about their religion.

I started disliking Rashad when he coached TUF with Rampage

He is such a fucking drama queen. On TUF I had to turn it off sometimes because I was so annoyed with the bitching of Rashad.

I’m sure 90% of it is just him trying to hype and sell a fight, but do it like a man, not a teenage girl.

I honestly think Rashad is mad Bones won the belt, and is getting the hype. Then Bones saying he guess’s he’d fight Rashad made him feel betrayed, but it’s business. It’s not like Bones said “Oh, I’ll whoop his ass, he’s a chump”. Rashad needs to get the mindset that business is business.
