Chris Weidman: 'I'll finish Anderson Silva' (Video)

"I think with a full camp, I'll finish him. Obviously I'm not fighting Anderson Silva next, but if I was, that would be my prediction. I'm confident with myself, you have to be as a fighter. I have a lot of respect for Anderson Silva, I think he's awesome. I don't know who I'm fighting next, I don't know when. I was hoping to fight in May, because that's in New Jersey and it's another FOX card. I would love to be on FOX again. But it's wherever the UFC feels I'm at. I'm down."

Undefeated middleweight contender Chris Weidman, who inserted himself into "the mix" by huffing and puffing his way past Demian Maia at the UFC on FOX 2 event last month in Chicago, feels confident that with a full and proper training camp, he would not only defeat reigning 185-pound champion Anderson Silva, but finish him in the process. Anyone think the "All American" is getting a little too big for his britches? Or can he use his wrestling and jiu-jitsu to eventually finish what Chael Sonnen started?

yeh..

He dropped somewhere around 25 lbs, but surviving an oddly gassed Maia doesn’t entitle Chris to that statement. Unless he throws an “eventually” somewhere, as in “I’ll eventually get to the point in my career where I will finish Anderson Silva” he’s just talking bullshit.

He is still young, the champ is 36

and no one between AS and Weidman have a huge advantage over him in skill sets. There are also only afew bright prospects behind him, but none so bright.

I see him being the champ shortly after AS retires, or beating him in a rematch after getting trounced the first time helping him into retirement in 3 years.

not really

he was a very average wrestler until his re-emergance in the UFC after the WEC folded the 185 class. I can’t discount the use of TRT as the main reason for his “growth”. Considering he pissed 4x hot for Silva, and looked pedestrian against Bisping, I am not sure that his fights against Okami, Marquardt and Miler were not anomalies and not the norm.

On paper, Weidman has the wrestling chops to hang with Sonnen, but not Sonnen juiced up.

by KingLujan on Feb 17, 2012 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

Not sure who said that, but it wasn't me

Rashad has the best functional wrestling in MMA. I have said that for years.

But we need a barometer for skill levels. The NCAA’s provide us with one, just like Mundials or ADCC does for BJJ, K-1 does for kickboxing and gold gloves does for boxing.

It is all relevant to a prospect, but they still need to prove it in their transition to MMA.

They (the UFC) need to convince everyone that the fight is not really a squash match

people cling to any hope when the fighter in question (Shad) creates controversy and is not 100% likeable.

Same with Bones. And Anderson. And GSP. It is called promoting for a reason.

When the fans are clinging to events from 6 years past, they have bought the hype. Hell, I do it with Nick Diaz, lol.

5, 6, 4 . . . that's 1 TOO MANY

Yeah he defeated Demian Maia. Great. He took the fight on short notice and made the best of his opportunity.

Think about this for second.
How many times will Anderson Silva’s shoulder or knees allow him to fight this year or the next?
List of opponent ahead of Weidman:

  • Chael Sonnen
  • Dan Henderson
  • Munoz
  • Bisping
  • Belfort. Yes, Vitor Belfort vs. Silva in Brazil.
  • GSP has a better chance getting an opportunity than Weidman.
  • Rashad Evans or (any other LHW with a name) can go down and skip Weidman)

Weidman still has to face and beat the Palhares, Belchers and Tim Boetschs of the MW division.

That seems like he is very close to getting a shot and is already a contender.

Sorry, respectfully, fall back.

alrighty, well

weidmans already ahead of boetch, so lets kill that noise…palhares vs. belcher has already been signed, so thats gonna knock one more person behind him as well, hopefully palhares…chael is already the next fight for silva, so you cant really say that hes ahead of him in the sense your saying it, because he doesnt have to beat sonnen out for the next shot; sonnen has this one…hendo is at 205 these days with no intentions of dropping…munoz, bisping, and belfort i will give you, unless one of them loses, which is possible…the GSP-silva fight unfortunately wont happen…and the whole LHW dropping down scenario is all speculation…chris is 2 impressive wins, or just 3 decent wins away from a shot

yeah, good break down but . . .
that’s still 1 too many people ahead of him. This whole scenario of course is speculation. When Dana White or anyone says a fighter is in the mix, they’re basically saying let’s talk about this after:

  • You get a few more wins.
  • the top guys (#1, 2, 3, and the champ) or the guys that matter “sort themselves out”
  • “That seems like he is very close” keyword = seems
hendo is at 205 these days with no intentions of dropping

Dan Henderson has been saying that the only reason for him to drop to 185lbs. is to face Anderson Silva.

by magicmike on Feb 17, 2012 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

The only way Henderson fights at 185 . . . is if it is against Silva.
  • If Rashad gets injured on his way to Atlanta, the UFC will go with Henderson
  • If Sonnen gets injured on his way to Brazil, the UFC will go with Henderson . . . if he has time to cut the weight.

Considering the last time Henderson was in the UFC at middleweight, and his recent fights outside of the UFC (notwithstanding losing to Jake Shields)
Remember he beat Franklin, Palhares and Bisping.

Henderson will get the title. Dana White clearly said, if Sonnen did not win, they probably would have gone with Henderson.

by VeeisAnimated on Feb 17, 2012 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

Good points, but Henderson on short notice (if sonnen gets hurt) has no shot at beating Silva!

I don’t even think that Dana would do that bc Dan at 185 has no cardio, esp on short notice. Silva would just dance around for a round or 2 then finish him.

by MBOW on Feb 18, 2012 1:25 AM EST up reply actions

No way are Rashad or Vitor ahead of Weidman. In terms of MW contenders it is Chael then Munoz. Then Weidman is on par with Bisping since Bisping is coming off a loss.

by KingLujan on Feb 17, 2012 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn’t argue that they’re ahead of Weidman, I’m just saying that I’m 100% sure that they can get a title shot before Weidman.

Yes, Vitor Belfort can get another title shot.

IMO Silva doesn't fight long enough to face Vitor again. I see 2 maybe 3 more fights left for him.

He’s getting up there in age and now these injuries? I hope he goes out without a UFC loss. His reflexes should be slowing down by now and that’s why he’s so much better than EVERYONE in his stand-up. Most people think that a wrestler will beat him (if he gets beat) I think it’s a striker if he stays around too long.

Who cares if he dominated c-level opponents. There ar eplenty of useless undefeated fighters outside the UFC.

He gassed and looked like shit against Maia in a horrible fight.

He shouldn’t even be allowed to mention the champs name.

Nothing about Jesse Bongfeldt is memorable, dude.

A submission specialist that can’t finish Sakara?

Or was I supposed to be impressed that he defeated The Filthy Mauler who is 1-3 in his last 4 fights?

i dont need to make any

look at his record…you have any excuses for there being a big fat 0 in the L column?…rationality doesnt work with you, which shocks me because youre actually a fairly normal guy…but if someone brings up a fair point that doesnt coincide with your opinion, you just make a snarky comment and mock it…do you do that in real life? or just here when you dont have to look the person your being a douche to in the eyes?

You might want to iron those panties

And please tell me how your comment can be anything but an excuse. Excuses for a poor performance don’t go over very well in MMA. Did you see the reaction Diego received when he mentioned his ankles?

And what is this “real life” talk? Do you like want to come fight me now? Is that where you are going with this? Really? And are you insinuating that you are some gnarly bad ass looking dude that strikes fear into all mere mortals by just looking them in the eyes? I mean, wtf?

And maybe I do act like a douche on here sometimes for laughs, big deal. Oh, and FYI, every comment you’ve made here in regards to your real life tells the same story – that you really are a douche, you fucking douche!

Too much exposure on FOX to risk having Weedman stink up the joint again

I haven’t looked closely at the numbers, but I’d imagine a lot of first time fans changed the channel during the 3rd round of that fight and never came back.

Agree 100%

But the FOX deal wasn’t put in place just to keep the hardcore fans happy. The deal was made with FOX to expand the MMA fan base by converting casual fans and reeling in fans of other sports.

Dude, calm down.

I’m saying that Weidman is having a slow news day.
I’m dissing this article or Jesse Holland. I’m just having fun at the expense of Weidman.

But if you feel that strong about, feel free to call me an asshole, jack-ass, jerk or whatever. Yes, I understand that posting is a privilege and you do have a right to do whatever you feel.
Calm down.

When some fighter’s really didn’t have anything to say, and they were clearly not in the Top 5 or top 10, they would say “I can beat Mike Tyson” . . . and yes, those fighters were also having a “slow news” day. Uhmm, sorry I offended you.

NOT! What a joke.

everyone obviously is just reading the quote

he was ASKED how he would do against anderson silva…what is he supposed to say, “umm, i think he’d kick my ass, i’m not on his level”…no, hes gonna say that hes confident, just like any fighter would…fucking ed herman would say he could finish anderson too if he was asked how he would do, because no ones gonna say they would outwrestle their opponent to a boring decision, let alone say theyd lose…he wasnt calling anyone out, he was answering the question he was asked the most confident way possible

you completely missed the point

the point is not me being right or being first or whatever the case may be…the point is people jumping down his throat like “how dare you call out anderson silva after your last fight” well, he didnt call anderson out, the reporter asked him how he would do, and he responded with confidence…when have you ever heard a fighter get asked how he would fare against another and respond by saying “oh hed kick the shit out of me”…never, so why should chris do it to make a bunch of uneducated fans happy?
