UFC On Fuel 1 Rapid Reaction: Diego Sanchez Needs To Change Or Retire

This was originally posted over at fellow SBN site Head Kick Legend last night after the fight. We'd surely appreciate if you folks would stop by and show some love. I brought this up at the end of the comments section last night, and OJR said I should FP it here as well, so have it.

There's a term that gets used in this sport a lot called "evolution". Earlier today in fact, Jack brought up the de-evolution or over-evolution of Rampage Jackson into a mostly one-dimensional fighter. Throughout the past few years, we've witnessed Diego Sanchez roar into the octagon 17 times, and 17 times it's been pretty much exactly the same Diego Sanchez. It got him some measure of success - he won TUF1, and got a title shot at lightweight, but ever since then, real success has eluded him. It's easy to say that B.J. Penn took his soul, but that's just a fun meme. What's really happened is that the top levels of the division are just better than Diego Sanchez.

Diego hasn't added anything to his arsenal since 2005 and it's gotten painfully clear that if he ever wants to find success in this sport in the small time that he has left, he needs to change, and fast. I don't mean finding Jesus and renouncing weed, because quite frankly in my opinion, it's just going all-in from one addiction to another. He can be a sucker for women, weed, booze, religion or whatever he wants, but unless he starts really incorporating some MT, BJJ and better technical boxing, he's going to fail to those that out-physical him. Personally, I think his best chance for success is to drop back down to lightweight where his size-disadvantage becomes an advantage. At 170, he sports a muffin-top and sports an 0-3 record since 2007 to Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch and Jake Ellenberger - three people who are just better MMA wrestlers than he is.

To be quite honest, I don't think he will ever be a champion in the UFC, and if his dream is to truly have gold around his waist, he needs to swim in shallower waters. That said, I'm going to assume that he continues to fight in the UFC, he probably won't ever change up his style, regardless of the losses, and will never be more than a gatekeeper. Perhaps he goes and proves me wrong, but personally, I think that unless he wants to stop having broken parts in his face, he needs to seriously change his stubborn style, fight lesser competition, or just hang them up.

I'll also add in that if he wants to Chris Lytle it up and just have exciting fights with no shot at the belt, he's got every right to do so. He's gotten a bunch of FOTN bonuses already, but he's getting torn up in them. Kampmann looked like he beat him with a sack of glass, and he got a lovely broken nose out of this fight. The real downside to that is with his style, it's going to get very, very ugly when his chin eventually goes. Chuck levels of ugly.

I agree Diegos striking of just going forward with his chin tucked throwing a one-two combo

It showed in the Penn fight how bad it really was. The reason he could get away with it before is because of his pace. That just doesn’t cut it anymore with the new crop of fighters. I don’t think he’ll do that great at lightweight either he beat Stevenson and got a close fight against Guida just to get demolished by BJ…I think the way guida has been fighting lately he takes the rematch

Yes, yes, yes…to quote Mr. Sanchez.

I am a fan of this move as well. Even after the shellacking he took at Penn’s hands, Diego should have stayed at LW. With his limited skill set and his apparent refusal to evolve, he will not beat any elite WW out there.

Not to say that Jake E. is there as an elite WW, but he displayed a counter striking clinic on Diego (to quote Ulf). Jake took K’s gameplan and held on to it with discipline despite his gassing out.

Good stuff, Cory.

No need for the shout out but thanks anyway.

Even tho I initially acted like a small child, I have been forced to come to my senses. enzo-enormous is better at calling fights than I am, by far. I am a little immature but am working on it. Also, I love dudes and cant wait to get a reach around from the 209

Ahh, ok, that would make sense then
At 170, he sports a muffin-top and sports an 0-3 record AGAINST THE TOP WRESTLERS IN THE WW DIVSION since 2007 (Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch and Jake Ellenberger)

And did you know that Anderson Silva is 0-3 since 2003 against Ryo Chonan, Yushin Okami and Daiju Takase? lol

Stupid but let me explain

Diego Sanchez has beaten Martin Kampmann, Nick Diaz, Clay Guida, Paulo Thiago, Kenny Florian, Joe Stevenson, Joe Riggs, Karo Parisyan, Jorge Santiago.

Won The Ultimate Fighter Season 1 (middleweight not his true wieght class ), and the King of the Cage welterweight championship

Five ‘Fight of the Night’ Awards (4-1) ‘Fight of the Year’ award x2 (2-0)

15 finishes in 29 fights

Diego Sanchez will not change and he has no need to. He has accomplished a lot and has had a postitive impact on the sport. He hasn’t lost to schlobs and nobodies. To say change or go away is dumb, a lot of younga nd upcoming guys could use Diego as a good barometer of where they are, where they are goinga nd what they need toc hange.

Diego was close to winning over the number 3 welterweight in the UFC cards.

Get Real.

You listed a bunch of reasons that have nothing to do with the topic at hand

Except for the last two. I addressed that first one in the article. If he wants to be some gatekeeper, more power to him, but that’s a cop out for most people. Unless you plan on being Lytle, your goal is to win the title, which he will never be able to do with the way he’s been going.

The last point has some merit, except he lost and was losing very badly until the last 2 minutes (not close btw). He’s also getting torn up. If he doesn’t want to be Gary Goodridge in a few years, he needs to fix his ish

If the fight with Ellenberger was a title fight, Diego would have won.

Ellenberger and Condit match up very evenly as we have already seen

Now what if Ellenberger flattens Condit to win the title next fight and GSP gets reinjured.

Sure Diego wouldn’t deserve a title fight since he is coming off of a Loss, but he would have what it takes to defeat the champ in a 5 round fight.

A lot of “what ifs” in there, I know, but its still realistic.

if cows flew

i’d have steak in the air. But they don’t, so guessing like that doesn’t matter. If his chin holds up. Can’t go on if’s, only results at this point, and the results are bad.

The UFC is still a form of entertainment

And Diego’s style is entertaining.

The fans want to see him fight. But you want him to retire because you don’t think he will be champ???? Well, if that was how the UFC was ran, there would only be 3 fighters in each division.

LAME.

I have a better suggestion. Why don’t you retire from spamming mania’s fanpost section with some Minor League BE bullshit???

i like how the first two commenters agree with me

yet the next few go “wah this is dumb can’t believe u wrote this”

Also this is pro HKL stuff, not BE.

HKL is the farm system for BE, no?

Hence, the minor leagues.

Has Diego evolved much? No. I agree there

Is he better served to fight at 155? Sure, I agree there too.

But he should retire because in your mind he will never be champ? I strongly disagree with.

Diego himself even said he isn’t fighting for the belt anymore. He knows his place

If u had posted this before last night, id agree

but he came very very close to beating Jake E and that would have sky rocketed him to top 5 and likely a title shot.

Not sure I agree with close

Diego was winning the striking in the third round

Jake was resorting to his takedowns but was so gassed that he sloppily collapsed. Jake would have gotten smashed if it went another 2 rounds, hes very lucky

Whether or not he went to 155 for the title I think he stayed there too short a time

BJ doesn’t even fight anymore and though i’m not saying he beats Frankie or other top LWs he could have some great fights there, he probably feels better at WW, but he didn’t seem drained in the Guida or Penn fights, like he’d adapted to the weight by then but that’s me speculating. I’d prefer to see him there.

5-3, undefeated and undisputed, beat me ... if you can.
