Staal has potential and maybe we don’t need a number 1 in the sense of what Malkin, Datsyuk, Richards. I think Staal with Lupul and Kessel would be a dandy plus he’d keep them in better check with their defensive responsibilities.

Considering Yoh’s ties to Pgh, if Staal was going to go anywhere, it would make sense to send him to Minny. And pairing with Lupul and Kessel is really intriguing to me. Staal has rarely played with top line talent, so I guess my judge of him is solely based upon the guys he has played with. he doesn’t really make the guys he plays with better, which is one of my main criteria for #1 C. Considering Lupul and Kessel are already top shelf, it sould work. Stall would be too expensive with Crosby and Malkin up for re-sign in the next few years, but Corsby’s injury history makes Staal too valuable right now.
How do you like that Nick Johnson signing? I hate when we lose good prospects because of depth issues.

Larry Muprhy and Ulf Samuelsson (sp?). I saw a kid in Toornto near the Eaton Centre rocking a Pens ‘Samuelsson’ jersey and it was awesome.
Staal is a number 1 on a average team but a great number 2 on most and a solid three on any.
Staal would be the perfect player in Nashville but Minny has so many depth issues that i fear they’ll trade everybody but Clutterbuck and Mikko. They should trade Nik Backstrom and get some picks for him.

Well, if they're waiting for it to end...
then you’re probably not fans, and as far as I’m concerned, they can go have anal sex with the binghole of a barrel of ammonium nitrate. True fans hope it goes on forever.
However, this story is accelerating towards a climax as you can see. And when it does, there will be a new story. It will not feature Overeem or Kos (although I can see a future character called Alistair Overeat in the strip). With all due respect, that’s a terrible suggestion. Blackfly will never become just a series of SNL punchlines. If you suggest that again, I will send Kyu after you.
True story: a certain editor of a certain MMA website whom I showed Blackfly to said he would be happy to featire Blackfly on his website if he could wuggest storylines. The first storyline he suggested involved Brock Lesnar wrestling a grizzly bear. I kid you not. That explains how I ended up at Mania.
Everyone wants to be a writer. Sheesh.

It’s hard to take a position. The entire purpose of sport is to see athletes test themselves physically in a throwback to our more primal days when raw power and aggression were the key to the tribe’s survival on the battle field or hunting range.
And for combat sports, let’s face it- as fans, we’re not far removed from the spectators in the Roman Coliseum baying for the blood of gladiators. We WANT to see knockouts, because they prove decisively and dramatically the fighting prowess of a fighter. But every knockout results in a little bit of brain damage. Making the sport safer means making it less worth watching.
Hopefully MMA can find a balance. Boxing seems to have become much safer without ruining the competitive aspect of the sport.
I'm not a huge boxing fan. What changes did the make that made it safer?
I am saddened both for Gary, and for the future of the sport. The more fighters we see end up this way the greater the chance is that the sport will become something completly different from what we see today. Since the early days I have always had a feeling that mma at it’s highest level is just too good to be true. That feeling lessened as rules and regulations were implemented, but news like this brings it right back. Even the first stars of the sport arnt very old yet so it pains me to wonder what guys like Leben, Wand, Chuck, and Big Nog will become.

The guy died. In boxing today, no ref would allow a guy to take such a relentless beating before stopping the fight.
The good news is, MMA (at least in the UFC) is far ahead of boxing, with no standing 8- count, and refs jumping in as soon as a guy can’t defend himself. The medical exams and suspensions also help greatly as does the fact that UFC fighters don’t fight as often as boxers. Also, boxing fights are longer and consist almost entirely of being punched in the head, while MMA fights involve much more grappling, which is easier on the brain.
So I’d say the prospects for today’s MMA fighters are much better.

They'd stop the fight much sooner.
In that fight, he got hit twenty-nine times in a row before the referee stopped it. Caused a lot of controversy in the aftermath- all the talk about banning boxing, etc. In fact, after that fight, boxing stopped being televised for about ten years. The result is, the rules have progressively gotten safer. They don’t stop fights quite as soon as in MMA, but they certainly stop them much sooner than they did 30 years ago.
I guess we can find some comfort that boxing is still around. I just keep seeing Yvel kicking Gary in his head.
I wouldn’t be surprised if some more rule changes happen over time, and head kicks might be one of them.

Well, right now
Kyu and Nurse Julie are expressing their love for each other (I believe Kyu has top control at the moment), and so I’m respecting their privacy. Also, unfortunately since their Valentine’s day activities are NSFM (Not Safe For Mania) there will be no strip here on Wednesday. That’s because the Wednesday strip involves Nurse Julie helping Kyu deal with his morning wood. You can of course see the strip on the Blackfly website.

Unfortunately not
Publishing a censored version means I have to create two versions of the same strip, host two versions on my server, etc. Too much hassle. But the day after the NSFM strip is published, I will always do a recap here on Mania and remind readers where they can see it.
