Nate Diaz vs Jim Miller odds for UFC on FOX 3: Who opened as the -250 favorite?

Nate Diaz (left) vs. Jim Miller (right) will headline UFC on FOX 3 on May 5 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

His brother, Nick, may be dominating headlines thanks to a positive drug test and looming suspension but Nate Diaz has a big fight coming up against Jim Miller in the main event of UFC on Fox 3 on May 5 in New Jersey.

And he's the underdog.

According to noted oddsmaker Nick Kalikas on his MMAOddsbreaker show, Diaz is the +190 dog to Miller, who opens as the -250 favorite for their lightweight bout that should serve as a number one contender match.

Diaz has won his last two bouts since making his return to the 155-pound waters, besting both Takanori Gomi and the streaking Donald Cerrone. The latter victory put him in title contention and a win over Miller could very well push him over the top.

It won't be easy, of course, considering the New Jersey native's track record. Though he recently dropped a hard-fought decision to Ben Henderson in a bout he was dealing with sickness for, Miller is still 8-1 in his last nine bouts, including a first round submission over Melvin Guillard just last month.

Considering the platform, it being the third network televised event and these two occupying the headlining slot, the winner could have a title shot awaiting him on the other side.

Stay tuned.

In the meantime, let's hear your initial reactions to these early odds. Too high? Too low? Let's talk turkey in the comments section below.

Striking goes to Diaz, strength goes to Miller

Submissions about equal but wrestling goes to Miller.

Miller wins by split decision.

I don't see Miller finishing Nate by strikes

and since Nate’s grappling is outstanding, as far as submissions go, I don’t see Miller submitting him either.

Because he’s the stronger of the two with the better wrestling, I take Miller to win in a close fight.

The Diaz's do poorly against good wrestlers.

Miller is a great wrestler. Miller by UD or TKO/GNP.

miller by ud for me,no way he stops nate

he needs to get it to the ground as well and smother nate quickly because if nate gets a rythmn it could be a long night for JIm

I dunno about that one

I can easily see this being a stand up war, I think the wrestling / jitz will cancel out in this one. For that reason, i see Nate by UD. His stand up has looked great lately, much better than Jim’s IMO, although he’s dangerous, i just think Nate is hitting his stride now.

by KOaddict on Feb 10, 2012 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

I don't see Miller willing to engage in a stand up war with Diaz though.

Which is the issue, striking no doubt goes to Diaz, but with Millers wrestling I think he’ll dictate where the fight takes place unless Diaz has really worked on his takedown defense and considering the Cerrone leg swept him about 15 times I don’t really know how good it is….

That is probably the only way for Miller to win honestly, which is definitely possible...

Having said that, I feel Diaz offers more ways to win, therefore he gets the edge IMO. I sure hope Diaz has worked on his TDD / wrestling, after he got rag dolled by Rory, can’t think of a reason why he wouldn’t after that performance.

if nate learned anything from that guida fight...

it’s not to let the smaller fighter on the inside.. i doubt highly nick will allow miller to get close enough to clinch, let alone get a takedown,.

nate will use his reach to his advantage this time.. no fucking way millers out striking diaz.

You go out there and start acting like a terrorist, you're gonna get Osama Bin Laden'd

by Rolandando on Feb 10, 2012 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

Jim tried a couple takedowns and spent most of them getting hammered with short shots while he worked on them. Gray wanted nothing to do with Miller on the ground, and the one time he did think it was safe to do so late in the fight Miller latched onto his leg in a matter of seconds and Gray didn’t give another thought to trying that nonsense.

That being said, Jimmy’s striking now compared to Jimmy’s striking then is like night and day. That Jim Miller doesn’t do things like drop Bang Ludwig on the feet.

by Rolandando on Feb 10, 2012 5:38 PM EST up reply actions

And really showed how tight Miller’s ground game is. Everyone remembers the arm-trapped back take but forgets that the one scramble to set it up was the only time Bocek was able to get anything going, and he is a very high level grappler. Miller threatened him with several subs, and a high level guy like Bocek had almost two minutes to fight against only one arm of Miller’s and not only never got close to the neck, he wasn’t even able to muster any real threatening offense with it. People thinking Miller will be scared of the ground with Nate are being silly, just like people were before Do Bronx.

Yep. Miller fought Hendo, who is known for bringing a high pace, with two pretty debilitating issues and then was on the wrong side of some hammering and was still pushing to the last second of the fight and had enough in him to drop Bendo in the third. He won’t have any problem going 25 if need be.

I see a lot of money to be made on Nate

Miller’s thing is his ground game, but Nate’s got enough skills there to cancel it out… which leaves us with Nate’s striking, which took out Cerrone, whose striking is definitely better than Miller’s.

So many reasons why.

  • Look at Diaz (read: any Diaz) history with strong wrestlers in the UFC
  • Miller has a tough chin
  • Diaz (read: any Diaz) wrestling is something close to piss-poor
  • Because I made the same statement for Miller’s last fight.
  • Because JustBlogGuy said so.
  • Miller is waaaaaaaaay better than Clay Guida. Note, Guida manage to secure a W without “beating” Nate Diaz.
  • Did I mention wrestling?

Either way the fight should be interesting. Commence the Stockton Mean Mug.

Somebody on BE had the Diaz corner transcript written up, and save for a brief moment where he is told it’s 2-2 in the fifth before Nate immediately overrules and calls it 3-1, he spent the entire fight being told he was dominating. I don’t think he has the right skill set to counter Condit’s plan, but his corner never impressed on him the need to try, and since he was seeing things through the same Real Fight-colored glasses, he didn’t see it either.

It might be some lurkers too, who sign up and just go with that style.

I agree

He proved himself time and time again against the best. I don’t understand why people hate. He’s the only one that was serious about really wanting to fight Fedor in his prime

Randy may have his flaws in his personal life but as a fighter he was one of the best.

He could still hump Nate Diaz in a rematch. Miller dominates with phenomenal wrestling and BJJ

did no one watch the diaz vs condit fight?

liked i called it weeks before the diaz vs condit fight, miller has to utilize the leg kicks with the same stick and move strategy, just like i called it with the diaz vs condit fight in condits case.if miller stays in the pocket and retreats the same way cerrone did its gonna be a short night or even a long ass night depending on diaz getting the ko.now….. what does diaz have to do, if millers going to utilize the stick and move strategy condit used, then diaz has to take it to the ground and do what gracie students do best jits.if im ceasar im training nate on his takedowns and not so much wrestling based takedowns but more judo based techniques, naturally because i think millers strenght will play a big part in negating any wrestling diaz has to offer.if millers willing to trade in the stand up i dont see him winning simple as that.
