UFC 146: Alistair Overeem vs Junior dos Santos in the works for May 26 in Las Vegas

Photo

Happy Memorial Day weekend!

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) head cheese, Lorenzo Fertitta, dropped a few bombs last night from his official Twitter account, shedding some light on potential match-ups in the Heavyweight division and beyond.

Starting with Alistair Overeem vs. Junior dos Santos.

According to Fertitta, the 265-pound title fight is expected to headline the upcoming UFC 146 pay-per-view (PPV) event on May 26 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Overeem has been crushing the competition for years now, compiling 11 wins in 12 fights (one no contest) since 2007. He made a successful debut with the UFC last December by stopping (and retiring) Brock Lesnar in the first round by way of technical knockout (TKO) using his vaunted K-1 level striking.

Star-divide

Dos Santos, no different than Overeem, has been absolutely destroying his competition. In fact, just like "Demolition Man," he hasn't lost a fight since 2007, the lone defeat of his career.

However, unlike "The Reem," the Brazilian bomber has been running through top competition inside the Octagon. He's 8-0 under the UFC banner with five knockouts, including his 64-second destruction of Cain Velasquez that earned him the heavyweight strap.

Time to find out which of these monsters is the true king of the heavyweights.

Who ya' got?

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on the upcoming UFC 146 fight card as it becomes available.

Glad for this fight

I think its something for fans to be excited about.Hope JDS isn’t rushing back from knee surgery because he needs to be at his best for this fight.

Damn this is going to be interesting.

I hope Junior’s bawksing doesn’t get him into trouble.

This will be epic.

Totally agreed.

I am usually of the mindset that equal level of kick boxing will beat the same level of boxing because you have more tools. But I have been WAY more impressed with Junior’s level of MMA boxing compared to Reem’s level of MMA kick boxing.

by Edgecrusher71 on Feb 10, 2012 9:54 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah I sort of feel the same way.

Reem’s size may play a factor though.

idk if Reem will want to trade.

Remember, he was the same size when Werdum was landing on him. And I think we are all firmly of the opinion that Junior’s hands are better than Werdum. I think we’ll see a lot more kicks out Overeem this time out. Like a big ass version of what Condit was doing…advanced apologies for dragging that shit into this thread but I’m merely speaking of the strategy!

If he gets close enough to clinch

He will be close enough to get TKFO BUT he can keep distance and use his kicks where he can hit JDS but JDS cannot hit him. Kind of like Machida vs Shad.

\m/

by Edgecrusher71 on Feb 10, 2012 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

yup..

Machida vs shad is a good example but in terms of size & speed I’m thinking Forrest vs Page. I think the thought process there’s is the opponent has dangerous hands, so legs are longer than arms why not kick & keep yourself out of the danger zone. And with Reem being an accomplished kickboxer it only makes sense. And in truth, Having been KO’d by other power punchers, the thought has to be in his mind that JDS is the biggest strongest puncher he’s faced.

I am saying Cain did get stopped in his last fight (as evidenced by your gif; hence my last fight comment also). JDS is number one right now, but I still believe Cain to be the better overall HW. His layoff and bad gameplan aside, you don’t think Cain wins that fight every other time??

He didn't really try to get a TD

Now I’m not trying to discredit JDS’ win in any way, but Cain tried standing and got tagged. We all know Cain can take probably any HW down, and any HW can knock another down/out with one good shot.

My opinion is still that Cain is a better fighter. JDS is great at standing, but Cain is more well rounded.

My little brother is saying Cain Velasquez vs. Frank Mir?

Any of you more informed individuals hear anything of the sort?? Cain is the man I met him once and he bought me a drink! I know I should sit tight but I was just wondering if anyone had heard anything of that sort.

Cain is the man.

Everyone needs their setbacks. I think Cain grows from his and he has all the potential yo hold on to that belt

Randy Couture is my hero. End of story.Io

Maniac trip?

Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerer of death's construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds

LoL LoL

Oke im gonna try to keep it short …

We all know Jds goth fast hands and good bjj but witch brasillian mma fighter dus not know a little BJJ it comes as a standart Weapon with those fighters..

Allistair goth good stand up a lott of power and he knows his way on the ground
Plus im pretty sure he is a lott bigger that JDS and he weights a litte more to
Now of course NOT always the bigger man wins !!!

But to keep it short i dont see jds getting allistair on the ground for a submission
Since allistair is a lott bigger so for jds to win it would have to be a fast ko
like he did against CAIN …

Allistair Just needs to avoid a boxing match and be patient keep his HANDS up
Use his big knees and If he sees the opening HOOK jds in the face ..
I dont see jds taking more that 4 Solid knees be it in the face or breadbelly

So dont kill me when i say this but jds goth a little more than a punchers chance

But im stick with jds punches reem knees jds sleeps reem Eats:)
