Floyd Mayweather vs Miguel Cotto fight set for May 5 in Las Vegas

Floyd Mayweather.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather? Yeah, right.

Mayweather went in front of the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) today (Feb. 1, 2012) to apply for his fight license for a May 5 bout that everyone and their mother hoped would be against Pacquiao.

As it turns out, "Money" was granted his license by a unanimous vote of 5-0, according to ESPN.com. During the hearing, Mayweather revealed that he has come to an agreement to fight junior middleweight Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Kevin Iole later confirmed that the bout will be for Cotto's 154-pound title.

Cotto, of course, is coming off his destruction of Antonio Margarito back in Dec. 2011 at Madison Square Garden in New York. He's won three fights in a row and was last defeated by -- surprise -- Manny Pacquiao.

So it's not the fight the fans so badly wanted but realistically, it's probably the best fight available outside of it.

I dont see Cotto

as an “easy win” for anybody. Cotto is a beast… I bet this fight will be much closer than you think

He's a tough guy, but he'll get picked apart.

Goes to a fairly one sided decision, my guess.

Yeah, but he's got the whole underdog thing going on.

He gets dropped a lot of the times but sometimes still wins, he’s also a big name and a perfect fan favorite to feed to gayweather. They know what fight we want they’ll put on every fight but that one.

Now, count up your crimes!

agree whole heartedly

Like Sugar Shane before him, Cotto is at least 3 years past his prime and now Floyd is there barking up the tree.

Mayweather is going to make a cool 30+ mil on this fight. Who can blame him really?

I don't blame him at all

People still buy his fights regardless of opponent. This will easilty do 1.5 million buys, possibly get close to 2 million, so there is no reason for him ot risk the “0” while he can get paid large sums of money for easy fights.

And Cotto, now, is an easy fight.

Your fault if you took it that way

I said he is 3 years past his prime and never mentioned his age once. The best Miguel Cotto to ever fight was at least 3 years ago. He has declined dramatically since then.

Floyd took 2 full years off. Throw in his fighting style and it is believable that he is still in his physical prime. He most likely will never get back to as good as he will be in this fight after the prison stint, though, so I doubt we ever see Mayweather/Pacquiao.

Sadly, as a Cotto fan, you are wrong

Cotto WAS a beast about 4 or 5 years ago before Margarito’s cheating ass nearly killed him.

This is Floyd yet again cherry picking opponents who are past their prime, worn down and match-up well with him so he can pad his record.

Now Floyd is fighting Pac’s leftovers. Pathetic. I hope Cotto wins, but it’s highly unlikely

he said there wernt enough money in it bullshit! Nah.
Guys like Bernard Hopkins keep their bodies in shape and don’t drink. You won’t hear reports about cocaine, weed and all of that nonsense in between fights. Hopkins is focused.

Mayweather is not anomaly, he was born into the sport and saw many fighters f*ck up their careers with dumb sh*t.

Yeah, I think it is safe to say that many guys take a hits in the gym. I just don’t see how you can say one particular fighter takes more hits than others.

Who? What are you talking about?

Can you compare how many hits Rashad Evans or Rampage takes during practice compared to Anderson Silva based on fighters that have seen him train?

How often are these people seeing him train? Where at Blackhouse and X-Gym? After all it is a proven fact that no one trains as hard as Cain Velasquez or Rich Franklin because Clay Guida was there and he saw it all go down. Those guys are relentless.

yeah . . . whatever.

So few people realize that he’ll simply be 7lbs lighter than his normal cut. Against yet again a slower & over the hill opponent. They also fail to realize that when Cotto was a monster, and Margarito was breaking down the door, and all 3 were on a collision course, that Floyd convienently “retired” for almost 2 years to AVOID them totally.

its ridiculously easy!

Floyds record is full of fighter who are past their prime or who are so far under or overweight that its ridiculous that people can’t see. Corrales was 6ft @ 130lbs with a same day weigh. JM marquez came UP almost 19lbs to a catchweight and Mayweather didn’t even bother to make weight and just paid him 150k..De la Hoya? Please! The man has amazing skills, and I regret that he wasn’t given any heart to go with it.

Chess and Checkers

No argument. I think MANY fighters have questionable opponents or situations that heavily favored the popular prize fighter.

Similar arguments can be made about Pacquiao’s recent opponents.

But as it stands, while Bob Arum (Top Rank) was offering Mayweather Jr. to fight Margarito. Pretty Boy Floyd was thinking about taking control of his career to get a bigger payday to face Oscar De La Hoya for far more money. And if you look at Mayweather Jr.’s career compared to all the aforementioned fighters he ducked Cotto, Margarito, Pacquiao, Mosely . . . I would say he made some really smart decisions.

He eventually got the big fight that Bob Arum wouldn’t give him.
Just like now, finally, Miguel Cotto is able to get the fight that he wanted for quite a while but Bob Arum didn’t think was feasible.

Hopefully more boxers take a look at both De La Hoya’s and Mayweather Jr.’s career when they were able to take more control over who they fought and when.

what?

You’re advocating fighters ducking challengers & fighting “names” with a shell wrapped around them? I get your point about fighters not getting milked by the biz (trust me, I dipped my toes in the waters & it chewed me up & spit me out). Anytime fighters can get control of their finances & careers I’m fully in support, but ducking fighters is a lot different from “cooking up” a match for a year or 2. I can’t respect waiting for a guy to come apart before you make your move….or demanding options on ring size, gloves, spontaneous 24/7 olympic style drug testing on a guy who’s never pissed hot. Meanwhile he didn’t demand any of that from Mosley now did he? The same mosley who DID piss hot and works with Victor Conte?

by Fat Daddy Doobs on Feb 1, 2012 4:02 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Mosely agreed to do the Olympic style drug testing.

I’m not advocating ducking challenges. That’s just the business. Skipping out on $8million to be in the position to earn $15-$20million in your career is pretty huge for ANY boxer.

I agree, there’s a lot of bullsh*t and Fukkery around Mayweather’s career – just like MANY other boxers. No debate there and I’m sure he (or his legions) have excuses for each situation. But that’s the business, the name of the game.

The promoters play chess while the fighters play checkers.
To wit: I don’t know how you guys feel about FightHype.com but . . .
http://www.fighthype.com/pages/content11517.html

According to Ben Thompson, Arum didn’t want to make a Mayweather vs Cotto fight happen back in 2005 after he fought Gatti. He’s thinking more along the lines of Margarito. Mayweather Jr. was apparently looking at the front door.

mosley volunteered to clear his name as he had ALREADY been popped with "the clear"...and he was begging for the fight.

But idk if he ever went thru the testing? And yes a soft DLH @ 15mil is a more tempting target than almost half for a hard as a rock Margarito (or plaster of Paris!) Remember Margarito had bitched up Kermit Cintron & ripped the ear half off of Sebastian Lujan at that point! Intimidating shit! Great bizness, but its also lead to Floyd protecting his O bcuz he knows its his claim to the Hall. One loss & he’ll have his whole career looked back on with skepticism. Much like people love to shit on RJJr after his day was done.

Cotto hasn’t been the same since the 1st Margarito fight…he struggled with MICHAEL FUCKING JENNINGS in his next fight and had struggles with Emmanuel Clottey, and fought timid for 8 rounds against Yuri Foreman that was injured in the 2nd! When it takes you 6more rounds to finish a one legged 2nd tier club fight, you are over the hill! And Cotto and Pac were and are still both managed by Bob Arum so what was your point there?

Um no you havent.

Cotto is top notch, look at his record.

He beat a better version of Mosely than either Pac or Floyd faced. After being beatn by Cotto Mosely would then go on to completely annihilate Antonio Margarito.

He stepped into the ring with Margarito when he was by far the most avoided man south of 160. He actually stepped in the ring with Pacman and gave him a hell of a fight and up until the 4th was actually winning.

Also notworthy is that he has only faced 3 opponents with losing records in his entire career. that is an astonishing number for a pro boxer.

By his 10th pro-fight he was fighting a guy with a 20-5 record. He was the first man to beat Yuir Foreman, Malignanggi, Pinto and Torres.

"i oilcheck need to take a reality check. What an imbecile i am to even think of going up against Scott1 with his perfect 1 and 0 sig record.I am already known as Manias biggest scumbag now i’ve got the moniker of a loser as well!TUT TUT SMH!!!"

I played 8======Danago in words with friends and he quit just like shogun.

This is why boxing has lost to MMA...

If Floyd and Manny worked for the UFC they would be talking about a 3rd fight by now…this is a disgrace not to give boxing fans this fight…I blame the fighters as well as promoters…

why isn’t his opponent pacman? I thought he was calling him out etc. I just want to see him get embarrassed in the ring, sadly i cant see it happening

it's called keeping a perfect record!

floyd doesn’t want pacman to hand him that L.

by stinky~fingers on Feb 1, 2012 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

Because he wants $100 million

You’d have to pay Pacquiao the same thing. So you end up with whatever you’d make on tickets and ppv, minus insurance and all the logistics, then minus $200 million to pay the fighters. Or you can have them fight other fighters, pay each fighter $30 million, and pocket the $140 million you saved by NOT putting that fight together.

Kevin Iole later confirmed that the bout will be for Cotto’s 154-pound title.

Prolly not, he will make Cotto vacate it so he doesnt have to pay that ridiculous sanctioning fee.

by Chorongota on Feb 1, 2012 4:21 PM EST reply actions

probly make Cotto pay for it..

I could be mistaken, but I think Pac did that to a couple of his opponents. Make them pay the fee then abandon the belt when he won. Think he did that around the time of the Barrerra fight? Can’t be sure..but I remember reading something like that in the “Ring” at some point..

Well he did the same shit with Mosely.

Made him vacate the joke the WBC title has become.

Does this mean Pacman get Bradley next? If so then golly that is just good matchmaking. Real talk.

by Chorongota on Feb 1, 2012 5:27 PM EST up reply actions

did you see bradley vs alexander?

The man’s got some skill but no real power..Bradley is more of an ugly mugger. He wins but he wins ugly. I don’t want to pay to watch that…bcuz any fight with Pac is PPV status & bradley does bring enough to the table.

Martinez would have been a loss

but i cant blame floyd for that, sergio is a bit too big for him

much too big

Jr would always be in his range and that typically means money wouldn’t take that fight unless they did it at 147. Could you imagine Sergio at 147??

Cotto's style is tailor made for Mayweather, easily countered and slow

I don’t think this is a bad fight to be honest although it’s coming a little late they should have fought back when Cotto was undefeated before he fought Margarito.

Agreed. Most boxers in the ring don't have Mayweather's moves or Pac's ferocity but it does not make them slow.

Looked slow against Pac Man and Money May is definitely faster than Miguel too

Cotto’s volume punching to the body is fast and aggressive but he is not very elusive his fundamentals are solid but he gets caught often especially with counters, he had that problem against Mosley at the beginning but he adpated later on and won the fight, Mayweather is the last guy you want to try and body punch while leaving your head open, Cotto is fast for his size but to be honest his speed has never impressed me and going against one of the fastest counter punchers ever is not exactly a good sign lol but I don’t care i actually like this fight I am going to watch it

Did anyone comment on the fact that Mayweather will be moving up in weight to fight Cotto?

And it wasn’t that long ago that people were hailing Cotto as the man to stop Mayweather

Some years back but not now. Mayweather has this via decision.

true that since then

the experience he’s accumulated consists of Jennings (paper champion), Clottey (solid win but some argue he lost), Pacquiao, and the men he’s fought at 154, one of whom no one respected, two of whom were already damaged goods. Which is fine, because he was in no way green in 2007-08, as a two-weight champion who didn’t come by those titles easily.

Too late for Cotto, but still I am more than happy with this fight.

Fedor hate is pathetic!

Ok if he was ducking and Dodgsing the best heavyweights in the world can somebody please inform me who would of stopped him going on a absolute tear through the mid 2000s!

Who in the world would of beaten him?
Who did he duck? Nobody!
CC and Nog were the best ranked guys at the time he stepped up and got the W so please tell me when and who did he duck somebody

Otherwise fuck off with the hate!

People who hate on Fedor obviously became fans after pride was absorbed by the UFC and are probably WWE fan boys still hurting over brocks dismal UFC demise
