Greg Bartram-US PRESSWIRE
Jorge Masvidal will replace the injured Gilbert Melendez and fight Pat Healy at Strikeforce "Champions" on Jan. 12, 2013 from the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Pat Healy tried to wait, but enough is enough.
Now that injured Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez has been removed from the promotion's final Showtime telecast, which is scheduled to go down on Jan. 12, 2013 from the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Jorge Masvidal has been positioned to step in and take his place, according to MMA Weekly.
And that's just fine with "Bam Bam."
Healy (28-16) has won five straight dating back to June of 2010. He most recently overcame Mizuto Hirota at the Strikeforce: "Rockhold vs. Kennedy" event earlier this year in Portland, Oregon, and already suffered through a September cancellation against "El Nino."
Time to move on.
Masvidal (23-7) was unsuccessful in his bid to dethrone Melendez in late 2011 but has otherwise fared quite well under the Strikeforce banner (when he's not dabbling in welterweight bouts), racking up wins over Justin Wilcox, K.J. Noons and Billy Evangelista.
Can he play to his strengths and keep this fight on its feet?
Strikeforce: "Champions" will also feature a cancellation by Luke Rockhold, who was originally paired off with Lorenz Larkin. Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion Daniel Cormier is still attached to the tattered fight card, but the best the promotion could drum up for his swan song is a bout opposite Dion Staring.
