Reports are emerging out of Brazil that "The California Kid" Urijah Faber will make his long-awaited return to the Octagon at UFC 156 on Super Bowl weekend against tough British fighter Vaughan Lee.
A Bantamweight bout that features one of the biggest names in mixed martial arts (MMA) is in the works for UFC 156 on Super Bowl weekend as Urijah Faber is reportedly set to make his return to the Octagon against Vaughan Lee.
Brazilian news outlet Tatame first reported the 135-pound collision; Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) officials have not confirmed the report as of Saturday morning. The match up will likely take place on the main card of the Feb. 2, 2013, event, which will emanate from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, airing live on pay-per-view (PPV).
Faber (26-6) will step in the cage for the first time since July and for just the second time since Nov. 2011. "The California Kid" failed to capture the interim UFC bantamweight championship at UFC 149 when he was defeated by Renan Barao via lopsided unanimous decision.
Prior to the fight against Barao, Faber was to face bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz after coaching "The Ultimate Fighter" (TUF) reality show; however, a knee injury to "The Dominator" put him on the sidelines for an undetermined period of time.
If the 33-year-old hopes to get another title shot and trilogy bout against his longtime rival Cruz, then a victory in February is a must.
Lee (12-8-1) takes a giant step up in competition at UFC 156 when he meets a former world champion of a major MMA organization for the first time in his career. The British fighter was last seen in the Octagon at UFC on FUEL TV 4 in July, losing via submission to TUF 14 runner-up T.J. Dillashaw.
The 30-year-old is 1-2 under the UFC banner, but will attempt to pick up an earlier candidate for "Upset of the Year" in 2013 by taking out one of MMA's biggest stars at a milestone event.
UFC 156: 'Aldo vs. Edgar' will feature a marquee main event with UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo, who will attempt to make his fourth title defense against former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. Also featured on the card will be a Light Heavyweight mash up between Rashad Evans and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, as well as a monstrous Heavyweight clash between Alistair Overeem vs. Antonio Silva.
