UFC 154 results: Johny Hendricks will wait for title shot with Georges St. Pierre vs. Anderson Silva superfight possible

Johny Hendricks earned a welterweight title shot by knocking out Martin Kampmann at UFC 154 last night (Nov. 17, 2012) in Montreal. But with Georges St. Pierre vs. Anderson Silva still possible for May of next year, he's going to have to wait, which is exactly what he plans on doing.

No single fighter turned in a more impressive performance at UFC 154: "St. Pierre vs. Condit" last night (Sat., Nov. 17, 2012) at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, than Johny Hendricks.

"Big Rig" knocked out Martin Kampmann in just 46 seconds with a devastating left hook, the very same punch he used to plant Jon Fitch late last year. The victory was his fifth in a row and earned him the next crack at the welterweight crown held by Georges St. Pierre, who defeated Carlos Condit later in the same evening.

But about that ...

UFC President Dana White has all but promised St. Pierre will be fighting Anderson Silva next, likely in May of next year. So what does that mean for Hendricks?

Speaking at the UFC 154 post-fight press conference, he says he's cleaned out the 170-pound division so the only thing left to do is wait to fight St. Pierre.

"Well of course I don't like (St. Pierre vs. Silva), you know what I mean? But what can I do? I can go out there and finish fights and that's all I can do. I made my case. He's a tough fighter, I knew he was going to be, and I finished him. The only thing left, hopefully, is Georges St. Pierre. ... How often do you get a title shot? I've cleared out the division now and there's only one more person that I would like to fight. He's at the top. For me, personally, until I get that fight, that's what I'm waiting for."

That's certainly an understandable position but if St. Pierre does indeed fight Silva in May and needs another four months or so until his next bout, that means Hendricks would be on the shelf for almost an entire year before fighting again.

How likely is it that White would be okay with that?

Then again, he did say it's possible St. Pierre would fight again before a bout against Silva, so that leaves the door open. If that's not the case, what other fights are there at 170-pounds that make sense for Hendricks right now? Should he wait for his shot at the best or take another fight against a lesser opponent in the meantime?
