Fabio Maldonado injury cancels UFC 142 bout against Caio Magalhaes
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has announced the cancellation of the light heavyweight fight between Fabio Maldonado and Caio Magalhaes, originally scheduled for the UFC 142: "Aldo vs. Mendes" pay-per-view on Jan. 14, 2012, at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Tatame.com explains why:
The news was confirmed to TATAME by Maldonado's manager Alex Davis. "He hurt his ribs yesterday on trainings and unfortunately won't be able to recover in time for the fight."
With just a few days until showtime, the promotion opted to cancel the bout rather than try to find a short-notice replacement. No word yet on whether or not these two will be re-booked for a future card or go their separate ways.
UFC 142 will feature featherweight champion Jose Aldo, defending his 145-pound title against undefeated wrestler Chad Mendes. In addition, Vitor Belfort will strap on the gloves to try and ruin Anthony Johnson's debut at middleweight.
