If you're one of many mixed martial arts (MMA) fans who cringes every time we mention World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), now's probably a good time to click here and get the heck outta Dodge.
Those of you sticking around may (or may not) get a kick out of today's report that WWE Champion and longtime pro wrestler CM Punk will be escorting Chael Sonnen to the Octagon prior to his middleweight fight against Mark Munoz at UFC on FOX 2 on Jan. 28, 2012, in Chicago, Illinois.
MMA Fighting has the details:
World Wrestling Entertainment champion CM Punk will escort Chael Sonnen to the cage prior to Sonnen's fight against Mark Munoz live on FOX, according to sources close to Sonnen's camp. When reached for a comment, both Sonnen and Punk, a proud native of Chicago, as well as a long-time MMA fan, would not confirm the story, which was first reported by MMA.tv poster FrontRowBrian Tuesday night.
According to the same sources, Punk will not corner Sonnen during the fight. He will simply walk Sonnen to the cage, much like former WWE champion Batista did with Manny Pacquaio prior to "Pac Man's" May 2009 bout against Ricky Hatton.
Sonnen has long been heralded as a pro wrestling-style performer, living in a kayfabe world and cutting very animated promos that talk himself up and run his competition down.
But is this taking it one step too far?

He’s held the WWE title and ROH titles along with other titles. He brings a independent style of wrestling to WWE and has gain some interest back to mainstream wrestling. He’s done great in his profession and I don’t see the hate for him just because he’s not an MA fighter.

CM Punk was a title holder, huh?
It’s like he’s an oscar winner for playing a fighter. That’s neat. Well done. But he’s not actually a fighter. He may get in shape to look and act like a fighter. But he’s not a fighter. So I respect the craft and the spectacle that goes along with pro-wrestling (I was a Jake the Snake fan when I was a kid), but all in all, he’s really good at a skill-set that doesn’t mean anything at all. His presence next to Chael means nothing and has no weight on anything—it’s just kinda lame.

It’s funny isn’t it? For a while I watched TNA regularly and even though it has all of the bullshit storylines the majority of wrestlers are fantastic athletes, some with incredible acrobatic skills.
It may be fake in how the fights pan out, and how the wrestlers actually tell the opponent when they are about to do certain moves so they are ready for them, but I mean… I don’t even know if the Motor City Machine Guns are still around as a tag team but they have pulled off some absolutely amazing moves in the ring.
Maybe they aren’t real ‘fighters’ but there are certainly a lot of talented athletes who are committed to having a career in professional wrestling.
And this is all coming from someone who can’t stand wrestling any more. I admire the skills of a lot of professional wrestlers but all of the guff that goes along with the storylines and all that jazz is too much for me.
MMA is like a puzzle, it's just a matter of finding a solution to each situation.

If you dont admire that it takes some degree of skill to be a pro-wrestler, then people are just hating for the sake of hating. These guys are in ridiculous physical condition and will train just as frequently as mma fighters do. I hate how mma fans feel they need to be-little pro-wrestling just because it is in a similar sort of market to mma, thats exactly what boxing has done to our sport for years and look at how pathetic that is. And Sonnen is smart enough to know that bad publicity is still publicity. Chael didn’t use to do all of this. But then he tried it and found out that he gets more attention that way and more money he stuck with it.
